The University of Western Sydney is committed to providing a contemporary education that builds successful lives and careers for our students and graduates. The University's Teaching and Learning Plan (PDF, 405Kb) reflects the educational mission and values of UWS, and outlines the key goals for 2004-2008 for enhancing students' learning experiences and for further improving the quality of the learning environments at UWS. Implementation of the University's strategic plans is co-ordinated through the Planning and Quality Committee (PDF, 99Kb) and performance against plans is reviewed annually by the Board of Trustees.
UWS's commitment to quality in learning and teaching is reflected throughout its governance processes, its codes and policies, and its integrated framework to track and improve teaching. The LTAP Action Projects (UWS staff login required - MS Excel, 39Kb), arising out of the Learning and Teaching Action Plan continue to contribute towards overall improvements in quality in learning and teaching. The Quality in Learning and Teaching (QILT) web resource showcases good practice in learning and teaching in some priority areas for UWS.
Students' views are of critical importance in the evidence-based approaches used to target improvements. The University regularly undertakes detailed analyses of data relating to institutional performance in learning and teaching, in order to identify strengths and key areas for improvement, and to establish key actions for improvement.
Academic courses provide a richness of practical experiences that contribute to the qualities for which UWS graduates are known and which ensure that our graduates have excellent employment outcomes.
The University's staff engage in continuing professional development in learning and teaching and the University is developing a formal program of professional development which integrates teaching, leadership, and postgraduate supervising. The achievements of UWS staff and their excellence in teaching have been recognised within and beyond the University, and evidence of effectiveness in teaching is essential in making decisions about academic probation and promotion.
The University provides a comprehensive network of services both for students, to support them with their learning, and for staff, to support them with their teaching.
