Associate Professor Paul Wormell
Chair of Academic Senate
Paul Wormell is Associate Professor and Chair of Academic Senate at the University of Western Sydney. After completing his doctorate at the University of Sydney, where he was an elected student Fellow of Senate and Vice-President of the University Union, he tutored and undertook postdoctoral research at the University of New England. He joined UWS as a Lecturer in 1990, and has been actively involved in the university’s growth, development and organisational changes since then. His interests and activities encompass governance, teaching and research, and he has many years of experience in academic administration, course design and student advising. In 2003 he was a member of the university's Strategic Planning Task Force, and since then he has taken leadership roles in course development, formulation of academic policies, and academic management at the School and College levels.
Associate Professor Wormell's academic background is in physical chemistry, and he has taught a wide range of topics in physical, analytical, environmental and forensic chemistry, and laboratory quality management. Currently he teaches in the university's Forensic Science program, and gives specialist lectures in molecular spectroscopy. He has a particular interest in the human contexts of forensic science. His published research is based on experimental and computational spectroscopy, using light, ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths to probe the properties and structure of organic materials. His wider professional interests include the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and the Australian Academy of Forensic Sciences.

Ms Vivienne James

Vivienne James holds an arts degree and a Diploma of Financial Planning, and has worked in the finance industry since 1980. Vivienne is a Certified Financial Planner with the Madison Financial Group. Vivienne’s previous experience includes 23 years at BT Financial Group in the roles of Head of Margin Lending, Head of Corporate Superannuation, Trustee Director of the BT Staff Superannuation Fund and Head of the BT Private Investment Division, and four years as Director, Investec Private Advisers Pty Ltd. Vivienne also authored The Woman’s Money Book which has sold in excess of 100,000 copies. Vivienne is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, sits on the board of the Sydney Dance Company and the University of Western Sydney (UWS) Foundation, and is also a member of the UWS investment committee.
Mr John Banks
(to 31 December 2017)
John Banks arrived in Australia in 1985 after having worked in the UK in Recruitment and Management Consulting.
On his arrival he worked in a commercial role with Linfox and then became a founding member of the Human Resources Consulting arm of Morgan & Banks.
For the next 15 years John’s work involved growing a business that managed change, and structure and resulted in an organisation that was respected as a leader in the Human Resources and recruitment industry. This success was based upon early adoption of web based technology, psychological tools, and an understanding of the changing dynamics facing industry.
In 2003 as founder and director of a Human Resources company he worked with organisations to create efficiency in their outsourcing requirements.
As a director of Talent2 Consult his current activity involves outsourced training, HR, outplacement and psyche services.
Ms Genevieve Gregor

Genevieve is the co-head of the Asia Special Situations Group in Australia. She joined Goldman Sachs in 2009 and was named Managing Director in 2011.
Prior to joining the firm, Genevieve was head of the Australian loans capital markets business at Citigroup. Previously, she worked at MIM Holdings, now Xstrata Australia Limited. Genevieve serves on the Board of Trustees for the University of Western Sydney. Genevieve earned a BEcon from the University of Queensland and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance from the Securities Institute of Australia. She and her husband, Doug, live in Sydney with their daughter and son.
Mr Glen Sanford
Deputy Chancellor (to 31 December 2013)
Glen Sanford is an Audit Partner at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu with 25 years’ experience specialising in professional auditing and accounting issues relating to multinational and large local companies. He is the Deloitte Australian Life Sciences Leader and spends his time working with and advising clients in that sector. He also focuses on the broader manufacturing, import and distribution sectors, all of which involve Glen daily in Supply Chain Management issues.
Glen has a Bachelor of Business (Credit) from the University of Technology, Sydney and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. Glen is a Registered Auditor and Justice of the Peace.
Mr Ian Stone

Ian Stone is the Owner and Managing Director of Advance Metal Products (Australia) Pty Limited, a world class advanced sheetmetal manufacturing company.
Ian commenced Advance Metal Products as a one-man operation in 1986 and now employs 210 personnel with an annual turnover in the vicinity of $35 million. The Company has earned a reputation as Australasia’s leading sheetmetal component supplier to a diverse range of customers.
Widely renowned for its ability to embrace new and emerging technologies, Advance Metal Products has three manufacturing facilities in Ingleburn in south-western Sydney and another in Hemmant in Brisbane housing state of the art CNC manufacturing technology. The Company purchased the intellectual property and client base of Bosco Manufacturing during October 2004, expanding into the design and manufacture of office and industrial storage.
Ian’s commitment to the growth of our great nation is evidenced by his involvement with the University of Western Sydney as a member of both the Regional Council and Business and Industry Advisory Panel.
Ian is a member of the New South Wales TAFE Board Consultative Committee for the Manufacturing and Engineering Research programme and TAFE NSW New Manufacturing Strategic Directions Committee.
Married with a son and daughter, both now employed within the business, Ian likes to spend his free time with family.
The Hon Kim Yeadon
Deputy Chancellor (to 31 December 2013)
The Hon. Kim Yeadon was a Labor Member of the NSW Legislative Assembly from 1990 to 2007 representing the Western Sydney electorate of Granville. Kim also served as a Minister in the NSW Labor Government from 1995 to 2003 holding a number of portfolios including Minister for Western Sydney, Information Technology, Energy, Forestry and Land and Water Conservation. He also Chaired the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Independent Commission Against Corruption from 2003 to 2007.
Kim is a foundation member of the Katoomba Group, an international working group comprised of leading exponents from the forest and energy industries, research institutions, the financial world and environmental NGOs, all dedicated to facilitating strategic partnerships to launch ecosystem services and environmental products in the international marketplace.
Kim currently works as a consultant on issues of the environment, climate change, energy and government.
Prior to entering Parliament Kim worked as a research officer and industrial advocate with the Federated Miscellaneous Workers’ Union of Australia. He has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Sydney with majors in Government and History.

Ms Gabrielle Trainor

Gabrielle Trainor is a non-executive director and advisor. Her chair and director roles have spanned organisations in urban development, transport, education, tourism, culture and sport and community.
She was a founding partner and co-owner of specialist consultancy John Connolly & Partners and has over 25 years advised large listed companies on the management of major transactions and significant issues across stakeholder groups including in capital markets, governments, NGOs and opinion leaders. She is a member of the advisory board of Leighton Contractors, a director of the Barangaroo Delivery Authority, the Whitlam Institute in the University of Western Sydney, Business Events Sydney and the GWS Giants Australian Football Club. She is Chair of the National Film and Sound Archive and Deputy Chair of Barnardo’s Australia.
Gabrielle co-chaired the 2012 Federal Government review of the Australia Council for the Arts. She has had a long term involvement in indigenous affairs, including as director of Cape York Partnerships and the Charlie Perkins Scholarship Trust and she was a member of the Victorian Government’s Aboriginal Economic Development Group which reported in 2010.
She was educated as Ll.B at the University of Melbourne and was later awarded a Churchill Fellowship, during which she studied in the USA and UK, including as a visiting scholar at Stanford University. She undertook a short course in leadership at Wharton Business School in 2009. She is an Honorary Associate in the Graduate School of Government at Sydney University and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Mr Michael Pratt

Michael has an extensive career in banking and wealth management throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Most recently, he was CEO of Consumer and SME Banking, North East Asia with Standard Chartered Bank based in Shanghai. He is a former President of the Australian Institute of Banking & Finance and was the Inaugural Joint President of Finsia.
In addition to his recent appointment as the inaugural Customer Service Commissioner for the NSW Government he will also Chair the Service,NSW Board which will be the responsible entity for delivery of core State Government Services to the citizens and businesses of NSW.
Michael is a Non Executive Director of Credit Union Australia, the Bennelong Group and the Bennelong Foundation. He is also Chairman of Business Driven Systems Pty Ltd a specialist in delivering accounting and business solution software and undertakes various consulting assignments across financial services.
Michael’s other previous roles include senior executive positions as Group Executive of Westpac Australia Consumer & Business Banking, CEO National Australia Bank, Australia and CEO, Bank of New Zealand. In all these roles he has driven major change, delivering strong financial results and much improved customer service across multiple channels.
Previous directorships include Non Executive Director of MasterCard International Inc New York, Non Executive Director of MasterCard Asia Pacific, Non Executive Director of BT Financial Services, Non Executive Director of Standard Chartered Bank Hong Kong, Non Executive Director of Standard Chartered Bank China and Chairman of Prime Credit China.
Ms Gillian Shadwick
Pro Chancellor (to 30 April 2017)
Gillian Shadwick has recently joined the global executive search firm Braithwaite, Steiner Pretty (BSP) working in the education and public sector areas. She has had many years as a senior executive in both the public schools sector and the TAFE sector in NSW. Some of these were statewide leadership positions, and most recently as General Manager of Learning and Development. Others were in regional leadership roles including in Western Sydney. Gillian served as the Assistant Director General of Schools in South West Sydney for three years and later as the Institute Director of Western Sydney Institute of TAFE for six years.
In the tertiary sector Gillian was a teacher educator at the Institute of Technical and Adult Teacher Education and later at the Sydney College of Advanced Education. Here she developed and managed the Graduate Diploma in Adult Education (Basic Education). At that time she also undertook a three state study of part time teacher in TAFE and was the Australian researcher in multi- country UNECO project on civics education for illiterate women.
Gillian’s relevant committee memberships include as Chair of TAFE Directors, Australia, a board member of IDP, Deputy Chair of the Greater Western Sydney Economic Development Board, member of the Asia Education Foundation Board and member of two Ministerial Advisory Councils on Quality Teaching. She is currently a member of the UWS Audit and Risk Management Committee.
She is a fellow of the Australian College of Educators and of the Australian College of Educational Leaders.
Mr Christopher Brown
(to 30 June 2015)
Between 1992 - 2011, Christopher Brown was Managing Director of the Tourism & Transport Forum, comprising 200 national CEO’s and is now TTF's Special Counsel & Life Member. He was also Founder & Deputy Chair of Infrastructure Partnerships Australia, the national infrastructure lobby group. He is currently Chairman of Taylor Street Advisory, providing strategic communications and business advice to public and private sector clients.
Christopher is President of the Madrid-based United Nations World Tourism Organisation (Business Council), a Trustee/Director of Australia’s oldest industry fund, LUCRF Super and a Board Member of global communications firm, Kreab & Gavin Anderson, The Greater Sydney Partnership and Tourism Victoria. He is also Chairs the Parramatta Economic Development Forum.
Christopher serves on various Government boards: the Commonwealth’s 2nd Sydney Airport Steering Committee, National Tourism Strategy Review Committee, Indigenous Leadership Group, Infrastructure Security Panel, the National Disability Council and Brand Australia reference panel. At a State level he serves the NSW Wine Industry Council, the NSW Transport Blueprint Reference Panel, the NSW Passenger Cruise Terminal Steering Committee, the WA Government's Events Working Group, the Qld Tourism Strategy Group, the Lord Mayor's Sydney Business Forum and chaired the NSW Ministerial Taskforce on Tourism, Planning Investment.
He is currently working with the NSW and Federal governments, and local agencies, on a plan to develop Parramatta as Australia’s next CBD, recognising the growth of Western Sydney and the need for appropriate governance structures, transport infrastructure, social service delivery and community programs to enhance productivity, connectivity & creativity.
His philanthropic interests are in refugee advocacy, indigenous communities, climate change, spinal injury and public education. He was Co-Chair of SpineSafe and the Friends of Moorong at the Ryde Rehabilitation Centre and served as Honorary Executive Director of the Sport Tourism Youth Foundation, providing over $4 million to disadvantaged, disabled and aboriginal athletes, students and performers. Christopher chairs the Parramatta Eels Rugby League Business Roundtable.
He started (but never completed) an Economics Law Degree at Sydney University. He is an AICD Fellow and an Adjunct Professor in the Business School at the University of Technology. Born, raised and educated in Parramatta, Christopher Brown now lives in the inner west of Sydney with his two young sons.

Mr Tim Ferraro
Graduate (to 30 June 2017)
Tim is a leading natural resource management and agriculture professional with considerable experience leadership and management experience across the public and private sector.
Tim graduated from UWS in 1993 with a B App Sci (Hons). He also has an MBA (Strategic Management).
During Tim’s time at Hawkesbury he was heavily involved in student life, including serving as the student representative to the forerunner to the Board of Trustees and working as Executive Officer of the Hawkesbury Students’ Association.
Since leaving UWS, Tim’s working life has seen him lead projects, programs and organisations in a diverse range of areas related to natural resource management and agriculture. This included nearly eight years as a senior manager in the NSW Public Service.
Tim joined GHD in 2011 as a Principal Consultant in Natural Resources and Agriculture, based in Dubbo. His current work is reasonably diverse and includes strategic and business planning, evaluations and reviews and broad corporate governance advice.
Tim has served on a range of Boards and Committees and, in addition to his Board of Trustees role, is currently Chair of uwsconnect. He is also involved with a range of committees covering running and athletics.
Mrs Lorraine Fordham
General Staff (to 31 December 2013)
Lorraine joined UWS in 1991 and currently works on Kingswood Campus as an Administrative Officer in the School of Education.
Lorraine is an active member of her local community of South Penrith and is a member of the South Penrith Residents’ Action Group. She is a committed Unionist and has been a Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) Workplace Delegate for 17 years as well as UWS Branch Vice President for the last 2 years. In 2003, she was seconded to the CPSU as the Union Organiser for UWS for a period of 2 years. She is an alternative delegate to the CPSU/PSA Women’s Council. She was a General Staff Representative on the recent and successful round of Enterprise Bargaining as well as a representative on the previous round (2006-2008) representing CPSU members. Lorraine was one of the foundation members of the Lindsay YourRights@Work Campaign Committee. Lorraine has been Secretary of the Penrith Branch of the ALP since 2003. She has been a Penrith Delegate to the NSW ALP State Conference for the last 2 years. She has a passion for and commitment to social justice issues.
Like her predecessor, Lorraine has seen the University grow over the last 20 years. She is passionate about public education particularly for those who are disadvantaged and strongly believes that education is empowering. She has sponsored several disadvantaged children through the Smith Family’s Learning for Life Program. Lorraine has always been an outspoken supporter of the University within her local community. She has seen many students graduate from UWS and feels that in a small way she has had some positive impact on those students’ future careers. Lorraine is committed to UWS and its Mission: 'To be a university of international standing and outlook, achieving excellence through scholarship, teaching, learning, research and service to its regional, national and international communities, beginning with the people of Greater Western Sydney.'
Lorraine’s interests are reading, politics, community issues and she enjoys her daily walks with her Jack Russell Terrier.
Dr George Morgan
Academic Staff (to 31 December 2013)
George Morgan has been employed by the University of Western Sydney from 1989-1991 and 1995- present. He is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Humanities and Languages and a researcher at the Institute of Culture and Society, where his current research is on youth transitions and precarious work, amongst socially marginalised groups (Aboriginal, ethnic minority, working class) and on sustainable cities.
The author/editor of four books and numerous articles, George strongly supports the University's commitment to the greater Western Sydney region and its encouragement of students from disadvantaged backgrounds. He previously served as academic representative on the Board of Trustees in the late 1990s during the period in which the University moved from a federated to a unified structure.
He has worked as a teaching academic throughout period of great expansion of student numbers, a process he strongly supports, and is committed to working to ensure that his colleagues, both academic and general staff, are adequately resourced to cope with this growth and that planned for the future.
Mr Elie Hammam
Postgraduate Student (to 30 June 2015)
Elie Hammam joined the University of Western Sydney in 2005 as a first student, later graduating from the Bachelor of Medical Science program with First Class Honours. He was awarded a Heart Foundation Scholarship to undertake a PhD and is currently in the third year of his PhD in Neuroscience, in the Discipline of Integrative Physiology at The School of Medicine.
Elie specialises in microneurography, a means of invasively recording from human sympathetic neurones in health and disease. Elie has been awarded several highly competitive scholarships from national and international organisations. For his thesis, Elie is investigating the role of the vestibular system in the control of blood pressure. This research is conducted at the Campbelltown campus of UWS, in collaboration with Prof Kenny Kwok form the Institute of Infrastructure Engineering, and colleagues at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He is also recording sympathetic nerve activity concurrently with functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) of the brain in patients with congestive heart failure - a world first.
Having been at UWS for many years, Elie has become a strong advocate for student welfare and development. He is active on several committees, such as the Research Committee at the School of Medicine, the Campus Life Committee in Campbelltown and the Academic Senate. Elie also undertakes some undergraduate teaching in the Schools of Medicine and Science and Health. This first-hand experience has made him endorse blended learning and cross-disciplinary teaching, and its implementation in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. As a Student Representative on the Board of Trustees, Elie will ensure that all students’ voices – undergraduate and postgraduate – are heard.
Aside from academia, Elie’s passions are sporting adventures and community service. In 2011, he combined both passions to complete the Kokoda Trek as a pilgrimage for ANZAC Day, whilst raising $10,000 for the Cancer Council. He now has his eyes set on base camp Everest and kayaking the Murray Darling River as his next adventures.
Ms Jing Chen
Undergraduate Student (to 31 December 2013)
Jing Chen advocates for fairness, equity and a student centric approach within university governance. She is a third year student studying a double degree Bachelor of Law/Bachelor of Social Science at UWS. She is the current President of the Golden Lotus Society executive.
Jing was raised within western Sydney and has witnessed first-hand the power of education to transform people’s lives, not only as individuals but also the broader communities in which they live. As a result of these experiences, Jing believes that access to education is a fundamental human right as every person deserves an opportunity to attend university and have a fair chance in life. As such, she is a strong supporter of equitable university policies that are focused on addressing student needs.
At the campus level, Jing has worked tirelessly to improve student life. She organises a range of student focused activities at UWS including the UWS Music Cultural festival and also the Golden Lotus Society History Day. She also organised the 2011 Golden Lotus Society petition to get better quality food on campus which gathered 700 student signatures and comments and resulted in on-going changes in Connect policy and student services.
The youngest person and only undergraduate representative on the board, Jing injects a fresh and modern voice to the issues facing UWS students. She supports the magnificent diversity of our student community at UWS. She believes this diversity reflects the inspiring changes growing throughout western Sydney, and that these changes could be harnessed by UWS to create new choices and fresh opportunities for our students.
Jing is optimistic about the future and is excited to work with our students and staff to activate student representation and energise the quality of the student experience at UWS.
