Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education)

Professor Kerri-Lee KrauseProfessor Kerri-Lee Krause is Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) and Professor of Higher Education. She was appointed to the role of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education) in October 2011. Prior to that she held an academic position at the University of Melbourne in the Centre for the Study of Higher Education before being appointed as Director and Chair of Higher Education, Griffith Institute for Higher Education, Griffith University.

Professor Krause provides institutional leadership for the quality of learning, teaching and the academic program at UWS. Her portfolio comprises the Badanami Centre for Indigenous Education, the Library and a suite of distributed support services to enhance student learning, teaching and curriculum development across Schools and disciplines at UWS. Professor Krause is a member of several boards, including the UWS College Board, the South-Western Sydney Institute of TAFE Advisory Council and the Nirimba Precinct Board. These responsibilities highlight the value she attaches to collaborations across sectors to enhance students' opportunities to engage in tertiary education in Greater Western Sydney.

As a Teaching Excellence award winner in the early years of her academic career, she is committed to the value of mentoring and the importance of recognising and rewarding teaching excellence. At UWS she initiated the university-wide UWS Citations and Awards scheme and is committed to developing vibrant communities of practice among academic staff, including those who have been recognised for teaching excellence, as well as those in leadership roles such as Deputy Deans and Directors of Academic Programs.

She is recognised nationally and internationally for her contribution to higher education policy. Contributions at the national level include membership, with the Australian Centre for Educational Research and the University of Melbourne, of the national consortium responsible for development of the new University Experience Survey on behalf of the federal government; and membership of the Group of Experts invited to advise the federal government on higher education performance indicators. Internationally, her leadership in the field of quality enhancement has been recognised through such appointments as international reviewer and advisor on student engagement for the Scottish Quality Assurance Agency. Her expertise in the area of information technology has resulted in various international invitations, including an invitation to join an IMS Global Consortium project team (based in the USA) to advance technology and improve educational attainment and success; and membership of the Horizon Project Advisory Board, examining implications for higher education of emerging technologies on the near and long-term horizon.

In addition to her leadership and management responsibilities, Professor Krause is nationally and internationally recognised for her research on the contemporary undergraduate student experience and implications for quality and standards in institutional settings. She is a lifetime fellow of the Society for Research in Higher Education (SRHE) and has published widely in the field of higher education. Her research expertise spans broadly across higher education policy areas, with a particular focus on the changing student experience, the evolving nature of academic work and implications for quality and standards in higher education. She has managed several national Office for Learning and Teaching (formerly ALTC) funded projects in such areas as monitoring and assuring academic standards through collegial peer review, research-led teaching, assessment for learning, and an ARC Discovery grant on the influence of disciplinary cultures on curriculum.
