Inaugural Celebrating Hawkesbury Campus Luncheon

All UWS Hawkesbury Alumni are invited to celebrate the amazing contribution the Hawkesbury Campus has made.

We welcome you to learn of the physical renewal of the campus and plans for its future, while reconnecting with old friends and acquaintances and build new ones along the way.

The University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Rhonda Hawkins will speak about the extraordinary buildings and grounds program at Hawkesbury in recent years, and the University’s plans for its future as a major learning and research centre.

Hawkesbury Agricultural College Films

Hawkesbury Agricultural College Promotional Film, c. 1927

This silent film shows various views of Hawkesbury Agricultural College and activities, and was aimed at attracting new students to the College.

This film includes footage of the Fairy Circle, the main drive and the College gun. The film also illustrates various practical lessons including the spraying of crops, tomato plants, harvesting, and the Dairy and Butter Factory. The dairy herd, piggery, poultry section and the apiary are also pictured. Included are statistics of the Colleges produce for the period 1924-1925.

Hawkesbury Agricultural College Activities, c. 1946

This silent film shows many of the practical lessons taught at the College, such as harvesting (both horse drawn and tractor) and the harvest being carried from the field on trucks and horse drawn carts. The construction of haystacks and the packing of produce is also captured. Various activities in the orchard are also illustrated including students receiving instruction on pruning, spraying the orchard and picking pears. This film demonstrates wool classing, shearing and instruction on horse breaking.

Hawkesbury Agricultural College Various Film Clips, c. 1955/1956

The Hawkesbury Diploma in Dairy Technology, c. 1956/1957

This is a promotional film produced by the Milk Board of NSW to highlight the processes and skills required by the dairy industry and the career options available to Dairy Diploma graduates.

Hawkesbury Agricultural College developed students academic and practical skills with students taught to care for the dairy herd, processing of milk into a wide variety of dairy products as well as supplementary skills such as welding, and how to operate and maintain boilers. Students were also encouraged to participate in debating competitions, sporting teams and to take on leadership roles with the Students Representative Council. This film shows a student and parent being interviewed by Principal Richardson to plan the students study and career path, visits to commercial dairy factories to broaden students' experiences and a Diploma Day presentation of Hawkesbury Diploma in Dairy Technology.

This film includes footage of the Fairy Circle, the Main Administration Block and aerial views of the College. The student residences, Memorial Hall and library are also filmed. The sporting pursuits of the students are illustrated with footage of a cricket match, tennis, diving and swimming, a Rugby Union match, high jump and hurdling. This film captures all aspects of an operational dairy factory demonstrating the processes involved in handling fresh milk, the production of cream, ice cream and butter, and the manufacturing of powdered or sweetened condensed milk. The production and manufacture of cheese is revealed including the operation of the cheese vat and the curing rooms. The College Dairy Factory produced cheddar, gruyere, blue vein, and edam cheeses. Academic lessons are also shown including lectures in refrigeration and steam raising plants, laboratory lessons and business principles and bookkeeping.

A 1956 Diploma in Dairy Technology is shown at the end of the film.

Hawkesbury Agricultural College Open Day, c. 1978

This Open Day was held in conjunction with an international horticultural exhibition, the largest ever staged in Australia by 1978. Demonstrations included how to breed horses, bread baking, weaving, and how to grow Australian shrubs. This film includes an aerial view of the College and views of the sheep paddocks. There is footage of the orchard and fruit picking, horse demonstrations and a view of Stable Square. The principal at the time, Dr Graham Swain, provides his views on the College and its role.
