Work Health and Safety legislation

This year, new Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation came into effect in New South Wales.

UWS has collaborated with the unions (NTEU & CPSU) to develop a UWS WHS structure that involves consultation at both University-wide and campus levels.

You can now nominate to be a part of your campus-based WHS Committee, either as a general committee member or a Health and Safety Representative (HSR).

Nominations are open until Friday 25 January 2013.

To find out more about the changes, the committees and the role of an HSR visit the WHS Changes webpage (opens in a new window).

In Brief

Be in it to win it!

Did you use technology to hold a meeting or eliminate travel on IT Services Green Day, Thursday 8 November? Perhaps you were part of a phone conference or took part in a videoconference. Or maybe you used a program such as Skype or Collaborate so you didn’t need to travel to another campus. If so, don’t forget to enter the IT Services Green Day competition by letting IT Services know about your experience. One lucky group will win a catered morning tea with videoconference links provided.

To find out more information or to enter, visit the IT Services Green Day competition webpage (opens in a new window).

For more information about IT Services Green Day and the technologies you can use to minimise your carbon footprint, visit the IT Services Green Day webpage (opens in a new window).

Designated smoking areas

With the health of the UWS community in mind, the UWS Environmental Tobacco Smoke Policy will come into effect on 1 January 2013. After this date, smoking will be allowed only in designated smoking areas, which will be located away from main pathways and eating areas to minimise staff, student and visitor exposure to tobacco smoke.

More information is available via the UWS Environmental Tobacco Smoke Policy (opens in a new window) and Towards Smoke-Free webpage (opens in a new window).

Barista brilliance

Uwsconnect barista Crystal Dempsey recently won the coveted National TAG/Grinders 2012 award for Best Coffee, cementing herself as a top-notch brewer for the second year in a row.

As part of the competition, Crystal was required to brew eight coffees in less than 10 minutes and then present them to an expert panel for judging.

Crystal trains all the uwsconnect baristas, teaching them the best coffee-making tips and tricks. So if you’re yearning for a caffeine fix, head to your campus coffee outlet to enjoy coffee at its best.

To celebrate the win, uwsconnect is pleased to announce Coffee Happy Hour! From 12 noon to 1pm, from Monday 19 November to Friday 23 November, simply tell counter staff the name of the barista who won the National TAG/Grinders 2012 award for Best Coffee and you’ll receive a free regular coffee*.

For details on participating outlets, visit the News section the uwsconnect website (opens in a new window).

IT staff graduate

At the end of 2012, more than 20 staff members from the IT Services team graduated from various IT courses run by TAFE NSW.

“The program of courses was proposed to us by TAFE Richmond as part of an initiative to offer both training and recognition of prior learning (RPL) for many of our IT support teams,” says Sarah Chaloner, Associate Director of IT Services.

The certificates awarded include Certificate III in IT Support, Certificate IV in IT Support, Diploma of IT (Project Management), Diploma of IT (Systems Administration), Diploma of IT (Networking) and Diploma of IT (General).

“Over the past two to three years, we have been establishing a more structured approach to professional development and performance management, which the teams have really responded to,” says Sarah. “It has been great to see the study and prior experience of our Support Teams formally acknowledged.”

Congratulations to all staff involved.

Reaching for the stars

If you have or know a child who is intrigued by all things astronomy, you may be interested to know that Dr Ragbir Bhathal, a lecturer from the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics who is also an award-winning author and astrophysicist, has recently published a book titled Rocket into Space!

The pull-the-flap and fold-out-style book follows the adventure of two children, Maddy and Jack, who travel through space in a red rocket, in a story laced with facts about the sun, Earth, asteroids and more. There are even projects for the children to complete.

Published by National Library of Australia Publishing, the book is part of Ragbir’s contribution to the University’s Community Engagement program. For more information or to purchase the book, visit the National Library of Australia’s webpage (opens in a new window).

Helping students reach their full potential

Recently, businessman and philanthropist Graeme Tuckwell pledged $50 million to Canberra’s Australian National University to create 125 scholarships over the next five years.

While not everyone has a fortune to give, we can change lives through small, regular gifts as evidenced by our five current Community Scholars (opens in a new window) whose lives have been changed through the scholarships provided by the University’s staff, students and alumni.

More than 50 students have applied for this year’s UWS Community Scholarships, which are awarded to students who demonstrate the ability to triumph over hardship. With your support, we hope to award as many as possible by April this year.

You can find out more about a regular pre-tax salary deduction to support UWS Community Scholarships on the Staff Giving webpage (opens in a new window). To make a donation, you can also use the Online Donation Form (opens in a new window). To find out more about giving at UWS, contact UWS Development (opens in a new window).

By making a small donation, you are making a big difference. Thank you to everyone who continues to support these scholarships.

Frogmore House Spring Art Show

When you’re next at Werrington North or doing a course or workshop with the Office of Organisational Development (OD) at Frogmore House, check out the new Spring Art Show collection. The UWS staff and community art show is open from September to February with many paintings and photographs for sale.

The Frogmore House Art Show began in July 2005 and is organised by the OD team to showcase the creative talents of UWS staff and local artists. You may recognise some of the names of the artists as one of your colleagues!  Each year there are two exhibitions and over the past seven years more than 52 artists have had their work on display with more than 400 paintings, photographs and pieces of artwork.

You can view the Art Show any time between 8.30am and 5.00pm from Monday to Friday. As Frogmore House is often used for meetings and training, some rooms may not always be open, so it’s a good idea to call Kathy Adam-Cross on extension 7493 and book in a time before you head over.

By now you may have noticed the new UWS website taking shape. The new design aims to provide easier access to the information you need with options that can direct you straight to popular UWS systems and webpages.

The structure of the UWS website will remain the same (ie the information you need will be in the same place) within a new colour template.

While the UWS homepage and main landing pages have already changed to the new design, the remaining webpages will change over the course of the next two or three weeks, so there will be a cross-over period where you will see some UWS pages in the current design and some in the new design.

For more information about the new design, please visit the New UWS Home page webpage.

In Brief June 2012.2

Towards smoke-free campuses

After hearing what you have to say in the recent Smoking at UWS survey, the University is taking steps to provide a healthier environment for everyone on campus.

More than 6,000 staff and students responded to the Smoking at UWS Survey in November 2011. Anoverwhelming majority (70%) agreed or strongly agreed that UWS should be predominantly smoke-free with designated smoking areas on each campus. 78% of respondents said they prefer to work or study in a smoke-free environment.

Based on your feedback, from 1 January 2013, smoking will be prohibited on all UWS campuses with the exception of a number of clearly marked designated smoking areas.

This decision aims to provide a healthier, clean air environment as well as reduce the environmental impact of smoking litter.

In line with this decision, tobacco products will no longer be available via uwsconnect outlets on campus from 1 July 2012.

For more information on the decision, or to access resources to quit smoking, visit the Towards Smoke-Free Campuses website(opens in a new window).

Need help quitting? Staff who want to reduce or quit smoking can access free, confidential counselling via the Employee Assistance Program – call 1800 81 87 28 to make an appointment.
