Public Space Recycling Program
The Australian Food and Grocery Council’s Packaging Stewardship Forum (PSF) and the University of Western Sydney (UWS) have partnered up to encourage improved resource recovery by students, staff and visitors, by providing Public Space Recycling infrastructure at three of its campuses – Penrith, Parramatta and Bankstown.
UWS is committed to establishing, promoting and maintaining a culture of environmental responsibility, both within the university and in the wider community, and ensures that the university’s negative environmental impact is minimised through staff and students working together to achieve environmental best practice and ecological sustainability.
This initiative will contribute to the PSF’s objectives of increasing the collection of PET bottles, glass bottles and aluminium cans for recycling from higher education institutions nationally. The introduction of public recycling at UWS demonstrates a visible commitment to sustainable resource recovery by PSF and UWS.
The Packaging Stewardship Forum have provided clear, bright signage to ensure that students can recycle easily and effectively. A range of posters and signs have been developed with messages that built to become a clear pro-recycling theme, to attract interest to the bins. The PPR is a visible reminder to reinforce other sustainable behaviours on campus.
Public Space Recycling Launch
To celebrate Keep Australia Beautiful Week and Sustainability Month in August 2012, UWS officially launched the installation of new dual waste and recycling bins throughout its three major campuses at Bankstown, Parramatta and Penrith.
Sixteen new permanent waste and recycling bin stations have been installed at each of the three campuses, carrying the national call to action to recycle, 'Do The Right Thing, Use The Right Bin'.
The new bins will make it easier for over 29,000 students at the university to recycle and are expected to recycle more than 40 tonnes of bottles and cans a year - equivalent to over 1.5 million small plastic drink bottles.
