UWS Sustainability Pledge

Small changes can make big differences. Take the pledge today.

The Office of Sustainability is supporting a student initiative for our staff and students to make a personal commitment to sustainability in our everyday lives. By filling out your quick sustainability pledge form you are pledging to make one small change in your life to make your habits more sustainable.

How to make your pledge

Step 1 - Join us in making your personalised sustainability pledge.

You might chose to do any of the following or one that best suits you:

  • I will always shut down my computer and turn off the screen when not in use
  • I will turn off the lights when everyone has left the room
  • I will recycle all my plastics, glass and aluminium containers
  • I will join Western Sydney car pool
  • I will reuse scrap paper for note pads
  • I will limit the printing to what is necessary
  • I will print all my documents double sided
  • I will buy products made of recycled materials where possible
  • I will catch public transport, rather than driving
  • I will re-use shopping bags

Personal Sustainability Pledges

UWS Chancellor, Professor Peter Shergold - 'My pledge is not to use the air conditioner at home.'

UWS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janice Reid - 'My pledge is to lead by example and encourage e-meetings instead of driving between campuses unnecessarily.'

UWS Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Rhonda Hawkins - 'I pledge to print only essential emails and documents to reduce paper use.'

Director, Capital Works and Facilities, John Bonanno - 'I pledge to build as many new 5 Star Green Buildings as possible in 2013.'

PVC Engagement and International, Professor Gary Smith - 'I pledge to avoid printing meeting agendas and use the iPad effectively.'

Dean, School of Science and Health, Professor Gregory Kolt - 'My pledge is to eat local food where I can.'

Provost Lithgow Anne Foster - 'My pledge is to develop a native garden, install water tanks and use recycled water for the garden at my Blue Mountains cottage.'

Provost Hawkesbury, Professor Roy Tasker - 'My pledge is to buy wooded goods as carbon sinks, not metal things, wherever possible; eat and buy local foods wherever possible; and vocally flaunt my low-petrol-consuming hybrid Prius to other petrol-guzzling cars at traffic lights and M4 traffic jams.'

Office of Sustainability, Jen Dollin - 'I pledge to stop driving through McDonalds for take away, with whinging hungry kids, and feed them something healthy, thus saving the environment and our health.'

Office of Sustainability, Helen Angelakis - 'I pledge not buy any new pieces of clothing for the next 6 months, excluding shoes and no more wrapping paper.'

Office of Sustainability, Brittany Hardiman - 'I pledge to take a reusable shopping bag with me to the shops and cut down on paper towel use at work and home.'
