Sustainability Month

The Office of Sustainability along with uwsconnect is holding Sustainability Month (opens in a new window) for whole of August. The month will be filled with fun activities, trivia, free fruit days, other prize give aways, competitions and stalls. There will also be the launch of uwsconnects Green Products range, Public Space Recycling morning tea, UWS Community Cookbook launch, Clothing Swap and Sell Day (opens in a new window) and the Recycled Art Competition (opens in a new window).

This event is for all UWS staff and students - make sure you get involved!

Recycled Art Competition

As a part of Sustainability Month in August, the Office of Sustainability and uwsconnect are holding a Recycled Art Competition.

You can create an artwork of your choice in any medium using only recycled materials, no larger than 1 metre squared, to enter for your chance to win an iPad. Runners up will receive vouchures respectively at each UWS campus.

The competition is open to all current UWS staff and students, with the exception of uwsconnect Campus Life Officers.

Public Place Recycling Launch

The Australian Food and Grocery Council’s Packaging Stewardship Forum and UWS have partnered up to encourage improved resource recovery by students, staff and visitors, by providing Public Place Recycling infrastructure at three of its campuses – Penrith, Parramatta and Bankstown.

Come and enjoy a free morning tea and help promote our public space recycling initiative.

UWS Community Cookbook Launch

The UWS Community Cookbook is a joint production of the University’s Office of Sustainability and Student Support Services. It is designed to assist both UWS students, especially those in our residences and UWS staff to eat and live healthier and sustainably.

All recipes in the cookbook have been donated by UWS staff, students and our local community partners. To celebrate come and enjoy free food, purchase your own copy of the book and find out more about eating and living more sustainably.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Forum

The Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy Group would like to invite you to a Mental Health and Wellbeing Forum to discuss the UWS Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy. Working with NSW Population Health, Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District & Western Sydney Local Health District, this strategy strives to coordinate and prioritise initiatives around the mental health and wellbeing of students and staff.

The strategy’s main aims are to:

  • promote positive mental health and wellbeing
  • improve mental health/ill-health literacy
  • support people in the UWS community who are experiencing mental health issues
  • provide organisational responses that support mental health and wellbeing

At the Mental Health and Wellbeing Forum you can:

  • find out about the project and events that are taking place as part of the strategy
  • pick up a Mental Health and Wellbeing Resources for Staff pack
  • view the Mental Health and Wellbeing website
  • tell us what mental health and wellbeing initiatives you would like to see happen at UWS and how we can work together and share resources.

Lunch will be provided at the forums, which will be held between 12:30pm and 2:00pm on the following dates:

Hawkesbury Nepean River Adventure

Alive! is partnering with Willow Warriors and Catchment Management Authority for Landcare Week in 3rd-9th September.

Come and join us on the Houseboat as we make our way from Wisemans Ferry, stop overnight near Sackville and go onto Windsor the next day.

Along the way you will get to paddle in the kayaks, go for some guided tour/bushwalks, plant some trees and learn about the river and take in its beauty!

We start on Monday 3rd September and finish in the afternoon on Tuesday 4th September. This is free for you to join in and all food is provided. All you need to do is bring a sleeping bag and pillow. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity!

Spring Open Day

The Secret Garden on the Hawkesbury Campus is holding a spring open day. Come along and discover the wonderful plant nursey run by North West Disability Services.

Come along and visit Bruce and Molly, as well as the other farm yard animals, get your face painted, enjoy live entertainment, sausage sizzle and devonshire tea, participate in the treasure hunt and purchase some plants and veggies for your garden at home.

Where: Secret Garden, UWS Hawkesbury. Enter via the main gates located on the corner of Bourke St and College Drive.

Have you seen these trees?

Anne Bradbury-Bowler is seeking participants for a new study about childhood reminiscences on garden adventures and what parks and gardens mean to your memories and those of your family.

Volunteers will be asked to take part in a 1 hour recorded discussion with the researcher about their childhood reminiscences of garden adventures, the impact of annihilation of Eucalyptus moluccana trees in their gardens and parklands and what this means to them and their families.

National Tree Day

National Tree Day provides all Australians with an opportunity to do something positive for the environment and reconnect with nature. National Tree Day will be on Sunday 29th July – check out what is happening in your local area (local council website) or set up your own event.

Make sure you have a hat, sturdy shoes, long sleeve shirt, long pants, sunscreen, gloves and a bottle of water. Get involved and make a difference!

Artists’ take on Climate Action

Listen in to Radio 3CR (855AM) dial in Melbourne on Monday 30th July at 5pm for the Beyond Zero Emissions Radio Show.

The show will explore how wind turbines fit in to the new aesthetic, how carbon rations would revolutionise society and how Antarctica is a “James Bond” like setting for an eco thriller.

The show will feature Kerrie Leishman - Painter of The new Beauty, Saci Lloyd - Author of Carbon Diaries 2015 and Carbon Diaries 2017 and L.A. Larkin author of “ Thirst”.

Vegetarian Party Food Workshop

Hawkesbury EarthCare will be running their ‘vegetarian party food’ workshop. The workshops is a Lao (Thai) style vegetarian food – it is simple, fun and yum.

When: Saturday 21st July 2012
Time: 11am to 2pm
Cost: $25 per person which includes a garden tour, talk, workshop and lunch
Where: Hawkesbury Earthcare Centre, Hawkesbury Campus, corner of Campus Drive and Science Road

Water in the Landscape Photo Comp

Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils, a member of UWS RCE-GWS, is holding a photo competition for their Water in the Landscape program. The competition runs from June 18 – July 31 2012

This comp is all about water and Western Sydney, whether it is natural or urban (excludes household water). There are three categories you can enter your photo in:

  • Schools (entries must be submitted by the school and list a teacher as a contact)
  • Individuals 16 yrs and over
  • Individuals 15 yrs and younger

Sustainability Photography Competition

The Australasain Campus Towards Sustainability (ACTS) Sustainability Photography Competition invites staff and students from UWS to submit a quality photo entry on the theme of sustainability. Photo entries will be judged on their creative alignment with the theme of sustainability as well as their photographic quality.

Showcase your photographic talent by capturing the essence of sustainability! Finalist entries will be displayed at the 12th International ACTS Conference, held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on the 26-28 September 2012, where a People’s Choice Award will be voted by conference delegate.

Competition closes on the 30th July 2012
