SURF Projects

The Sustainable UWS Rolling Fund (surf) program funds sustainability projects that are developed, managed and implemented by UWS staff and students. Green rolling funds traditionally target energy efficiency, energy conservation, renewable energy, water conservation, waste and pollutant reduction and behavioural change projects.

The operational savings that are made as a result of these projects are reinvested into the fund so that the fund is self-sustaining. As a result, there is usually a stipulated payback period for these projects and a return on investment. Below are some of our projects from 2010/2011.

SURF Water Harvesting Campbelltown

Harvesting an additional 62,000 litres of water per year by harvesting discharges from the distilled water unit at the School of Medicine.

 


SURF Worm Wee For Sustainability

An initiative from the Office of Engagement - Saving 1 tonne of food waste/year along with saving 1.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions/year.


SURF Pulpmaster Hawkesbury Food Science Organic Waste To Energy Pilot

Installation of a Pulpmaster system on a 3 year pilot in Food Science at Hawkesbury. This system will take all food waste and some biowaste and covert via an anaerobic digestic into green electricity.

 


SURF UWS Djalaringi Child Care Centre Community Garden

Establishment of community garden within the Djalaringi Child Care Centre which includes children, parents, staff and students from the School of Education.


SURF Interactive Keypads To Save The Forests

The purchase of and trial of keypads for survey and data collection within the Educational Excellence and Equity Research Program to reduce paper use.


SURF Weed Wiper Selective Weed Control Applicator - School of Natural Science

The purchase of a Weed Wiper that will fit existing tractors and implements and enable the selective application of herbicides into weed infested areas including native bushland areas under threat from weeds.
