Professor Stephen Teo, Associate Dean (Academic), College of Business, University of Western SydneyProfessor Stephen Teo is Associate Dean (Academic) in the College of Business. Stephen has a PhD from the Australian Centre in Strategic Management at the Queensland University of Technology. Prior to joining academe, he has ten years professional experience in the banking and public sectors in Malaysia and Australia. Professor Teo held various academic appointments at University of Technology Sydney, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Macquarie Graduate School of Management, and Queensland University of Technology.

Awards and Recognition

  • 2007 Recipient of The Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (For sustained contributions in practise-based, research-led curriculum and assessment design to provide Business graduates with work ready competencies in HRM)
  • 2006 Commendation, UTS Team Teaching Award (with Dr K Redfern, UTS) for Coordinating the Bachelor of Business (Shanghai) program
  • 2004 Recipient of the University of Technology Sydney 2004 Teaching Award
  • 2004 Commendation, UTS Vice Chancellor’s Human Rights and Social Justice Award for using group work assessment task to enhance human rights and social justice

Research and Consulting Interests

Professor Teo's research and consulting interest is in the evaluation of HRM effectiveness, focusing on the status and influence of the HRM function in strategic decision making processes. He has also presented his research at international conferences such as the US Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychologists, American Psychological Association, British Academy of Management, the Asia Academy of Management and the US Academy of Management, where he received a best paper award from the Public and Nonprofit Division of the US Academy of Management. He has published over 70 refereed publications in the areas of Strategic HRM and International HRM in top ranking international journals such as Human Resource Management (USA, Wiley), International Journal of Human Resource Management, International Business Review, Public Management Review, Journal of Organizational Change Management, and Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resources.

Professor Teo is an editorial board member of Public Management Review, Journal of Small Business Management, Research and Practice in Human Resource Management, Career Development International, Sports Management Review and Deakin Business Review. In addition, he reviews grants for the Australian Research Council and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. He is a Fellow of the Australian Human Resources Institute and a Senior Associate of the Australian Institute of Banking and Finance. He has consulted for organisations such as the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change and Australian Defence Organisation.

Teaching Interests

Professor Teo has taught a variety of subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Human Resource Management, Strategic Human Resource Management, International Human Resource Management, and Organizational Behavior. He has successfully supervised to completion a number of honours, masters and doctoral candidates. In 2007, Professor Teo received a citation from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC, Formerly Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education) for “sustained contributions in practise-based, research-led curriculum and assessment design to provide Business graduates with work ready competencies in HRM”. Stephen (together with colleagues from ATN Universities) received a two-year funding from the ALTC to investigate how to embed performance management principles into Business Management subjects via self- and peer-assessment practices. This project will be undertaken within ATN Universities and the University of Western Sydney.
