UWS has a clear obligation to plan and implement actions for a more sustainable future, and a clear role of leadership in the future sustainability of Western Sydney. To meet this commitment in a comprehensive organised manner, UWS has an Environmental Management System (EMS) and an Environment and Risk business unit in the Capital Works and Facilities Directorate. The key initiates of the EMS are:
Water Savings Action Plans have been rolled out across Hawkesbury, Werrington South and Kingswood. Further actions are planned for Parramatta and Campbelltown, and water audits are planned for Bankstown and the Nirimba Education Precinct.
In addition to commencing energy audits across our campuses to gain a firmer understanding of where energy savings can be made, the Environment and Risk business unit is piloting a Green Office Program to improve energy efficiency in UWS offices.
The Green Office Program has also been designed to reduce office waste and increase recycling. A number of new initiatives are being trialled, including replacing under-desk waste bins under the desk and using smaller more efficient desktop bins.
The Greening UWS demonstration buildings (buildings BB and BA at Werrington South campus) showcase multiple dimensions of sustainability featuring green landscaping, waste and recycling. The site is a 'test bed' to see how these sustainability initiatives work.
Biodiversity management programs planned for 2009 include a wetland weed reduction program in conjunction with the Hawkesbury Nepean Catchment Management Authority and scoping of water sensitive urban design in relation to the riparian corridors on Kingswood and Campbelltown campuses.
