Construction of a new teaching building for UWSCollege

Schematic of new teaching space for UWS College on Bankstown campus

A new three-storey five-star Greenstar rated building is being constructed for UWSCollege on the Bankstown campus. It will be located adjacent to buildings 18 and 19, and will provide flat-floor teaching space, collaborative learning space and student amenities.

The new UWSCollege facility will provide Western Sydney students with greater study options.

The concrete structural works are now complete and the structural steel works are well underway. The services reticulation works are also complete for the ground floor and are progressing well on level one. The roofing works are scheduled to commence in early August, followed by the final fit-out works. The building is on track for delivery in mid-January 2014.

This project is co-funded by UWS and the Federal Government’s Structural Adjustment Fund/Educational Investment Fund.

Access restrictions: The construction area will remain offline and inaccessible while the construction works are underway. To ensure the safety of students, staff and visitors around the construction area, a new pathway and pedestrian crossing has been constructed alongside Ian Smith Avenue, between the P3 and P4 car parks. In addition, a number of car park bays in the P3 and P4 car parks will remain blocked off for the duration of the works. This space is required to accommodate temporary site offices and materials handling as part of the construction works for the new building. As the construction works progress and the space is no longer required for materials handling, etc, the construction fence will be relocated and car park bays will be made available.

Scheduled completion date: 17 January 2014

Upgrade of the southern wing of building 23

Floorplan of the building 23 southern wing upgrade

The ground and first floors of the southern wing of building 23 are being re-configured to provide four 30-student collaborative teaching spaces, a 24-student wet laboratory for the School of Education and 24-hour computer laboratories. The project will also involve consolidating the Information Technology Services spaces on the ground floor and the installation of a lift to improve accessibility to the building.
The detailed design for this project will commence in early June 2013. The construction works are scheduled to commence in September 2013 and will continue over the 2013/2014 intersession break.

Access restrictions: The southern wing of building 23 will be blocked off and inaccessible while the works are being completed.

Scheduled completion date: 10 February 2014

Development of learning commons in building 1

Schematic drawing of learning commons in building 1 on Bankstown campus

Over the 2013/2014 intersession break, underutilised floor space in building 1 will be converted to learning commons as part of a new initiative to provide functional, dynamic and informal learning spaces for students. The learning commons will include individual computer terminals as well as small, technology enabled group learning spaces (i.e. for four to six students) to encourage student collaboration. Comfortable, mobile furniture will allow students to customise the environment to suit their learning needs and glass writing surfaces will line the walls. The learning commons will also include wireless internet, electrical outlets and presentation screens/surfaces. A connection through to the building 1 courtyard will enable students to move easily between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

This project is currently in the design phase. The construction works are scheduled to commence following the completion of Semester 2, 2013.
This project is co-funded by UWS and the Student Services and Amenities Fee.

Scheduled completion date: 25 February 2014
