Current CW&F projects on Parramatta campus
Restoration and refurbishment of the east wing of building EZ, the Female Orphan School
The two-storey east wing of the Female Orphan School (building EZ) on the Parramatta south campus has fallen into a state of disrepair and is currently unusable. The intention is to refurbish the east wing to provide a community learning space, exhibition and gallery space named after Gough Whitlam and housing the Whitlam collection, a reading room, office accommodation, new amenities, a lift and a covered link between the first floor and the central wing.
The internal structural works are complete and the external structural works are nearing completion, along with services reticulation. The installation of the internal partitions, ceilings and finishes trades (i.e. painting and tiling) are progressing according to schedule.
Access restrictions: The east wing of building EZ, the Female Orphan School, will remain inaccessible until the works are complete.
Scheduled completion date: 31 July 2013
Civil and landscape upgrade of external area around building EZ, the Female Orphan School, including the Heritage Circle and roadway
In addition to the works to refurbish the east wing of building EZ, the Female Orphan School, the external area around the building and the Heritage Circle and roadway will be upgraded. The external area around building EZ will be upgraded with soft and hard landscaping, paved access routes, street lighting and feature lighting. Civil works will also be undertaken to improve drainage in the area. Careful consideration is being given to protecting the heritage elements around the building.
The upgrade of the underground services within the construction area commenced in early April 2013. Heritage brickwork around the Heritage Circle and roadway are currently being uncovered. They will be a feature of the landscaping upgrade.
Access restrictions: The Heritage Circle and roadway adjacent to building EZ, the Female Orphan School, on the Parramatta south campus is currently blocked off and inaccessible to allow the roadway and external area around the building to be upgraded. At present, there is no access to building EZ through the main entry on the southern side of the building. Alternative access to building EZ is available through the rear entry, on the northern side of the building, adjacent to building EQ. Directional signage will be in place to guide pedestrian traffic around the construction area.
Scheduled completion date: 31 July 2013
Installation of outdoor gym equipment on Parramatta south campus
High quality outdoor gym equipment will be installed between the P5 car park and the oval on the Parramatta south campus to provide students and staff with the opportunity to obtain a complete exercise experience within the scenic surrounds of the campus. Nine pieces of equipment will be installed, including an Ab-cruncher, Ab-hip swinger, Butterfly press, Cross trainer, Cycle seat, Ezy rider, Leg press/Chin-ups, Rowing machine and Shoulder press, which will help users develop most muscle groups and provide a cardiovascular workout. The outdoor gym equipment will be suitable for a broad range of age groups and fitness levels. A drinking fountain and outdoor seating will also be installed.
Scheduled completion date: 15 August 2013
Development of a new multi-purpose pavilion with learning commons
A new multi-purpose pavilion (building EEa) is being constructed on the north-western side of the Ian and Nancy Turbott Auditorium (building EE), Parramatta south campus. This new building will replace the temporary marquees the University hires for graduation ceremonies and other significant events on the Parramatta south campus. It will provide a flexible space (approximately 440 square metres) that can be opened up onto the surrounding lawn area.
In-between graduation ceremonies and other events, the new pavilion will operate as a learning common. Learning commons are part of a new initiative to provide functional, dynamic and information learning spaces for students. The learning common will provide the students on the Parramatta campus with small group learning spaces (i.e. four to eight students) to encourage collaboration. Comfortable, mobile furniture will allow students to customise the environment to suit their learning needs and writing surfaces will line the walls. The learning common will also include wireless internet, electrical outlets and presentation screens/surfaces.
With a scale and form sympathetic to the adjacent buildings, the new pavilion is set to complement the University’s existing infrastructure on the Parramatta south campus and further enhance the student experience.
The site establishment works for this project commenced in late April 2013. The earth works and associated sub-structure works will commence in early May, followed by the pouring of the concrete slab in late May.
Scheduled completion date: 30 October 2013
Development of a child care centre on the Parramatta south campus
A purpose built 47-place child care facility is being designed for the Parramatta south campus. It will cater for infants, toddlers and preschoolers and provide dedicated outdoor play areas with equipment for sensory stimulation and various stages of play as well as functional, well-appointed indoor activity rooms that facilitate adequate supervision. The facility will be constructed between the P14 and the P3 car parks.
This project is in the early design phase. Design consultants have been engaged to progress the design of the new building. The development application is currently being finalised for lodgement in mid-May 2013. The construction works are expected to commence in late July 2013.
Access restrictions: The construction area between the P14 and the P3 car parks will remain offline while the demolition works and subsequent construction works are underway.
