Associate Professor Kaye Shumack has a background in photography, visual design and media. She researches in the areas of visual language, genres and media representations, often working collaboratively in interdisciplinary research contexts. Her work deals broadly with the strategic and critical role of visual media within communication design. This includes issues such as: collaborative processes of 'making' as forms of design practice for teaching and research; the role of the situated self, difference, and cultural identity, in designing for public and private spheres; the value of design as a practice for visualising research findings.
