Professor Deborah Stevenson

Professor Deborah Stevenson is Head of the School of Social Sciences and a member of the Centre for Cultural Research.  Her research activities and interests are focused in particular on arts and cultural policy, cities and urban life, and place and identity. Professor Stevenson’s work, which has been translated into Greek and Chinese, includes the books: Tourist Cultures: Identity, Place and the Traveller (co-authored, 2009); Cities and Urban Cultures (2003); Art and Organisation: Making Australian Cultural Policy (2000); and Agendas in Place: Urban and Cultural Planning for Cities and Regions (1998).  She is currently writing a book for the UK publisher Polity that examines the ways in which the interplay of ‘circulation and location’ shape the material and imagined forms of the city.  Professor Stevenson is an editorial board member of various journals, including the International Journal of Cultural Policy and her research program has been supported by external funding from a range of sources, including five grants from the ARC. Her current ARC-funded projects are 'The City after Dark: The Governance and Lived Experience of Urban Night-Time Culture' and 'Culture Circuits: Exploring the International Networks and Institutions Shaping Contemporary Cultural Policy'.
