Biography
Born into a political family in Bangladesh, Farjana Mahbuba grew up with a strong political and social consciousness. With the blessings of inherited writing skill from her mother and agitating skill against dishonesty and corruption from her father, Farjana’s humanist attachment with the powerless classes in society led her to start writing in demand of justice and peace. Her first book published when she was in year eight. She has a strong passion for travelling and photography. Being a philanthropist, Farjana has a vision of a world with NO WAR.
Qualifications
Farjana completed her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Qur’anic Sciences and Islamic Studies from International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC), Bangladesh. Professionally, she has worked as a photo-journalist for a Bangladeshi local weekly magazine and as an assistant librarian in a university departmental library. Farjana has also worked as a research assistant with the prominent academic Dr. Ghazala Anwar and was an assistant editor for Nebula, an Online Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship. Currently she is working as a tutor in School of Social Sciences in the University of Western Sydney.
Research Interests
Farjana’s research interests include Muslim Gender Studies, Human Rights in Islam, the interrelationship of religions and Bangladeshi Studies, History and Sociology.
Farjana is conducting her current research on “Muslim Women’s Gender Perceptions in Urban Bangladesh” under the supervision of Dr. Adam Possamai and co-supervised by Dr. Jan Ali from CSCMS, UWS. The research is mostly designed to understand the social, economical and political development of Muslim women in post-war Urban Bangladesh and to explore their gender perceptions. It will also focus on secularist and Muslim feminism in the context of Bangladesh and the cohesiveness of the prevailing gender perceptions with actual principles and teachings of Islam.

Farjana graduated with high distinction in both her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from IIUC, Bangladesh.
