UWS Launches White Ribbon Day Awareness Campaign
White Ribbon is an organisation that is working to prevent male violence towards women. White Ribbon believes in the capacity of the individual to change and to encourage change in others. It believes that our generation can and must work towards stopping violence against women. Through primary prevention initiatives and an annual campaign, White Ribbon works to change the attitudes and behaviours that lead to men's violence against women.
In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly declared 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, with a white ribbon as its iconic symbol.
White Ribbon began in Australia in 2003 as part of UNIFEM (now UN Women). It formally became a Foundation in 2007. White Ribbon is Australia's only national male-led violence prevention campaign.
The White Ribbon Campaign is now the largest global male-led movement to stop men's violence against women. The University of Western Sydney supports this important initiative and works in partnership with local government and community organisations to ensure the message White Ribbon wishes to promote reaches the wider community.
The launch of 2011 White Ribbon Awareness campaign will take place on Monday 21st November at the entrance of Campbelltown campus where a large white ribbon will be painted on the hill at Narellan Road. For further information please contact Dr Beatriz Cardona on 96787185
