The University of Western Sydney (UWS) honours women in Greater Western Sydney and formally recognises their contribution to the development of the region.

Now in its eighth year, the award continues to grow and succeeds in showcasing the diversity and strength of women in Greater Western Sydney.

The awards are presented at the University’s annual celebration of International Women’s Day which will be held this year on Friday 2 March, 2012.

Each year, nominees are drawn from a variety of backgrounds including education, health services, local industry, volunteering, environmental groups, government and non-government organisations.

Past recipients of the Women of the West award include Sister Mary-Louise Petro, Mamre Plains Ltd (winner 2005), Dr Elizabeth McCusker, Sydney West Huntington Disease Service (winner 2006), Juliana Nkrumah, Centrelink (winner 2007), Helen Walker OAM (winner 2008), Jan Nicoll (winner 2009), Aunty Mae Robinson and Sister Kerry McDermott (winners 2010) and Dr Helen Somerville (winner 2011).

In 2008, the Young Women of the West award was introduced as an additional category to the award program. The Young Women of the West award provides an opportunity to recognise young women in Greater Western Sydney aged 18–28 years, who demonstrate leadership and contribute to improving the lives of people living in the Western Sydney region. Past recipients include Lavinia Vaifo’ou (2008), Samah Hadid (2009), Michelle Fenech (2010) and Najeeba Wazefadost (2011).

The Women of the West award is an initiative that demonstrates the University’s advocacy of social justice and equal opportunity, and commitment to engaging with communities in GWS to establish strong and mutually beneficial relationships.
