Winner

Juliana Nkrumah – Assistant Manager, Refugee and Network Support Team, Multicultural Services Branch, Centrelink (pictured with UWS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janice Reid).

Juliana was born in Ghana and is fluent in English, Fante and Twi. Assistant Manager of the Refugee and Network Support Team with Centrelink, Juliana has led a nationwide consultation process into issues of people from African countries. Juliana is a community member on the Nepean-Blacktown Regional Advisory Council to the Community Relations Commission. She is passionate about refugees and women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and is a very well respected and sought after public speaker who focuses on issues of social justice, access and equity and the Human Rights Framework.

Highly Commended

Sister Vivienne Claxton - Coordinator of Kalon House at Claymore (pictured with UWS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janice Reid).

Sister Vivienne Claxton from Campbelltown was highly commended for her outreach work in her local community as coordinator of Kalon House, the ‘house of welcome’. Kalon House is a project jointly sponsored by the Department of Housing, the St Vincent De Paul Society and the Good Samaritan Sisters. Over the last seven years, Sister Vivienne opened her door and her heart to residents of Claymore. She was instrumental in building trust and changing hundreds of families’ lives. Sister Vivienne was committed to empowering the Claymore community to achieve people-led change.

Councillor Helen Westwood AM - Bankstown City Council (pictured with UWS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janice Reid).

Councillor Helen Westwood AM was commended for her commitment and dedication to improving social balance, equity, opportunity and community harmony. Helen has served on Bankstown City Council since 1995 including three consecutive terms as mayor. She participated in many council committees and taskforces including the Women’s Speak leadership program and the Canterbury-Bankstown Community Harmony Round Table. Helen was instrumental in establishing the Reclaim the Night March which is now a regular feature event in the community, engaging women of all ages, particularly those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
