Professor Ian Wilson

Professor Ian Wilson has had a long career in general practice working in armed services, inner city, rural and urban practice. Throughout this time he has maintained a strong interest in medical education, including two terms with the RACGP vocational training programs, and extensive involvement with the RACGP examination. This culminated in two years as Cens or-in-Chief.

In 1997 he commenced his PhD in general practice, focussing on the impact of mental illness on the health of other family members. He started work as a part-time senior lecturer with the School of Medicine at the University of Adelaide in 1999. This quickly became a full-time position and he was promoted to Associate Professor after completing his PhD in 2002.

He left the University of Adelaide in 2005 to take up the position as foundation Professor of Medical Education in the new School of Medicine at the University of Western Sydney. He was the second academic appointed to the School and he had prime responsibility for developing and implementing the curriculum. Ian's philosophy has been to establish a Medical Education Unit that provides quality service to the medical course and is also a centre for high quality medical education research.  In the last few years he has been part of teams that have won 3 ARC grants and an ALTC teaching grant.
