Before each session begins, the Student Learning Unit at UWS offers UniStep and AcPrep programs to all students. These pre-session programs are a range of free bridging and preparation courses that assist new and continuing students to gain and develop required skills in academic writing, assignment preparation, mathematics and statistics. These programs vary in length of time and you can choose a program that suits your specific needs.
Students who are concerned about different academic expectations at University compared to TAFE or High School, or those who are entering university as mature-aged students will especially benefit from these programs.
Students say SLU bridging programs are 'helpful', 'relevant', 'give you a head start'.
Another program held in July is the Nursing Numeracy Winter Workshops. This is a 3 day program run on all campuses where the Bachelor of Nursing degree runs.
To attend the Nursing Numeracy Winter Workshop you need to register online.
UniStep is a combination of bridging programs including academic literacy, mathematics and statistics. The program aims to develop commencing students' maths and/or academic literacy skills.
Students can choose to do one or more courses available within UniStep.
Contact details: unistep@uws.edu.au or telephone 4736 0850.
UniStep literacy is an intensive program that offers commencing students an opportunity to practise and gain essential literacy skills for university study. These skills include reading and note-making, listening and note-taking in lectures, tutorial discussion, assignment preparation and essay writing. Students are given ample opportunity to practise their skills in a supportive environment. During the program, students write academic 'university style' essays and receive feedback from tutors.
UniStep is an opportunity to get to know fellow students in a relaxed and friendly environment while experiencing university life.
All participating students receive a free comprehensive academic study skills workbook.
Past students have commented:
"The atmosphere was great! I loved it! I found everything helpful in some way!
"The material supplied, group discussions and structure of the course were most helpful".
Please note: Students are required to attend every day of the program as each session builds on previous sessions.

The AcPrep program is an introduction to the expectations for assignment writing at UWS, for example, essay and report writing. It has relevant information tailored for university students about study skills, presentations, working in teams and time management. Students will receive a free booklet – Reaching for Success. AcPrep does not cover maths or statistics.
Student feedback comments at the beginning of 2008 included: “Information was extremely relevant” and “Really worthwhile experience.”

This one-day academic preparation program is conducted by the Student Learning Unit (SLU) in collaboration with the International Centre and Counselling Unit. It is a preparation program specifically designed to provide international students with an experience of the approaches to learning that they may encounter at UWS. It gives them valuable information and hands on practical experience of:
¨ Australian academic culture
¨ Tutorial participation & working in groups
¨ Time & Stress Management
¨ Forms of assessment
¨ Assignment preparation
¨ Academic writing
¨ What is “plagiarism” and how to avoid it?
A valuable resource booklet is available to students who attend. You need to register for the program online.
Each year in January, the Student Learning Unit runs a 2 hour information session to help students choose a suitable bridging program and to register a place in any program using our ‘Online Registration’ process. Attendance is strongly recommended.
The information sessions are offered at Penrith (Kingswood) and Parramatta campuses. Students need only attend one session.
Computer labs are open after the sessions so that you can register your place in any of the Maths or Literacy bridging programs. To be able to register a place, you must have your letter of offer or your UWS student number with you.
