Professional experience/placement and students with AIPs
‘Note takers’ are employed by the UWS Disability Service to assist students with a disability who, for various reasons are unable to physically complete the academic task of taking notes or have significant impairments preventing them from capturing information presented in a class that is essential to meet academic requirements.
Students with a disability or chronic health condition, where appropriate, will have a note taker assigned to take notes in their unit of study. The note taker may be taking notes for other students registered with the Disability Service in that unit or may be assigned to students individually. Students are not required to sit with the note taker unless the note taker has been individually assigned to the student. If you are assigned an individual note taker, they will contact you via email to discuss your requirements before class.
Note takers are required to attend timetabled classes and provide typed notes for all classes. The only exception to typed notes is classes where non-standard notation or symbols are recorded and approval has been given by Disability Support to provide hand written notes. Note takers can only provide notes in English. Once a class is finished, note takers are required to edit and upload the notes onto vUWS within 48 hours or two working days.
Please note:
- An email will be sent to you from Disability Support to confirm your need for a note taker. To be allocated a note taker, follow the instructions on the email to ‘confirm service’ for note taking assistance. You will be allocated a note taker once you have forwarded your confirmation
- All enquiries about note taking services should be forwarded to staff at Disability Support on (02) 9772 6343 or at disabilitysupport@uws.edu.au. At no time should you exchange mobile phone or home phone numbers with your note taker
- If you have an individually assigned note taker and the note taker has not arrived to meet you within 20 minutes of the class starting, contact Disability Support immediately on (02) 9772 6343
- If you are attending classes that do not have details of dates, times and venues listed on PlatformWeb, you will need to send a timetable of these classes to disabilitysupport@uws.edu.au for a note taker to be assigned to the class
- For any issues with the quality or accuracy of your notes or notes being late or not available on vUWS, please contact disabilitysupport@uws.edu.au immediately
- You need to retrieve your notes regularly from vUWS. Failure to do so may result in your note taking service being cancelled. If you no longer require notes (including where notes are no longer required for individual units) you must advise the Campus Disability Advisor and email disabilitysupport@uws.edu.au
- If you have any more questions about accessing your notes, or if after 48 hours or two working days your notes do not appear in the relevant vUWS folders, please contact disabilitysupport@uws.edu.au
