Working with a 'reader'
A ‘reader’ is a person employed for a specified number of hours per week by the Disability Service who will read printed material face to face to a student with a disability that impacts their ability to access the printed word.
What to expect
- Your allocated reader will be given a position description outlining their duties from Disability Support
- Your nominated reader will contact you via your UWS student email account to organise the first reading session
- At the first reading session, negotiate the day, time, location and length of future reading sessions with your reader
- You will then receive written confirmation of the agreement negotiated via your UWS student email account
- Your reader may read any type of written material which could include textbooks, journal articles, course handouts etc.
Come prepared
- You only have the allocated number of hours per week specified by your Disability Advisor, so make sure you have your reading material ready at the start of the session.
- Readers are not to assist in the collection of resources
- You are encouraged to record (audio) the reading sessions for you to play back later to review the material at your leisure
- Have a dictionary on hand to look up unfamiliar words
Remember
- Reading sessions can only occur on campus
- Readers are employed for a specified number of hours per week so use the time wisely
- Readers cannot explain the reading material, so if you have any questions about the content of the material please ask the relevant academic staff
- Please contact your Disability Advisor on (02) 9852 5199 if there are any issues
