What is the Master of Education (Leadership)?

The Master of Education (Leadership) offers educators a fresh approach to professional learning. This program is suitable for teachers (primary, secondary, early childhood) and education professionals in other settings (TAFE, community education, nurse education).

Through a combination of intensive conferences and web-based learning, you will have the opportunity to examine contemporary educational issues and to direct your own learning in a practical way. The Master of Education (Leadership) is a course that is responsive to the professional needs of educators. It is designed for those seeking to play a leading role in educational ‘best practice’ and ‘next practice’ and focuses on learning for future generations.

This postgraduate course is not an initial teacher education program.

It will help teachers and education professionals who are already working as educators to meet requirements for Professional Competence level of accreditation with the NSW Institute of Teachers.

How long does it take to graduate?

The Master of Education (Leadership) can be completed part-time over two years. In total you must complete the equivalent of eight units (80 credit points).

When and where will I be studying?

This course is designed to provide flexibility for education professionals engaged in full-time employment. The standard mode of delivery combines conferences in January and July with mid-semester intensives in April and September blended with flexible, online study. Following is the compulsory face-to-face study schedule for 2010:

• 18th January Orientation (new students) & 19th-22nd January 2010 Conference - Penrith campus
• Mid-semester Intensive tba
• 12th July – Orientation (new students) 13th-16th July 2010 Conference – Penrith campus
• Mid-semester Intensive tba

Are the Conferences compulsory?

Yes. The conferences form a major component of the degree. They allow a wide range of interaction, build opportunities to discuss and test ideas, and develop supportive networks with other educators who confront similar challenges in their workplaces. The mid-semester intensives are single day workshops held on one weekend half way through the semester of enrolment for each unit. These are also held on the Penrith campus.

What will I be studying?

You will study four core unit and four elective units. Specialist elective units can be selected from the suite of offerings across the MEd (Leadership), (MEd.(Special Education) and MEd (Social Ecology).

Elective units in MED (Social Ecology): Applied Imagination, Ecopsychology, Environmental Education and Advocacy, Research in Social Ecology; or elective units in MEd (Special Education): Behaviour Management, Professional Practice in Context, Inclusion in Action, Multiliteracies and Additional Needs.

Throughout your program, assessment tasks will enable you to focus on an area of your choice. Independent Study units allow further specialisation in contexts that could include: early childhood education; special education; arts education; gifted education; science and mathematics education; ESL or English literacy education, information and computing technologies in learning; PDHPE education; curriculum design; social justice and equity issues in education; community education; teacher mentoring or any other educational area of your choice. Independent Study units are designed to enable you to build a guided professional portfolio that provides evidence of your professional skills and understandings developed in the course.

Throughout the program, we have adopted a practical approach to assessment designed to provide choice and encourage evaluation and personal reflection about your practices.

Who will teach the program?

Each unit is taught by a team of academics, who will enrich your learning experience by providing multiple perspectives on unit content and educational issues, and a diversity of teaching approaches. Each conferences has a theme that is addressed by keynote speakers and scholars in residence, enabling ongoing discussions around questions of educational importance.

What are the entry requirements? 

To apply, you need to have completed a three or four-year undergraduate university qualification and have two years full-time teaching experience or equivalent in a professional area relevant to education.

Fees

The Master of Education (Leadership) is a HECS-based course for eligible Australian residents. HECS fees can either be paid up front, or retrospectively. International students are subject to up-front fees.
