Special Education Course UWS

Our Special Education Teacher Program

We know that all teachers, no matter where they work, will have children in their classes or early childhood settings who have a range of additional needs or disabilities. Knowing how best to accommodate their needs in teaching and learning environments that are stimulating and innovative involves the development of critical skills that benefit all children: not just those with disabilities. The Master of Special Education provides a post-initial teaching qualification which allows you to specialise by choosing the setting most relevant to your professional teaching practice needs in the areas of:
  • Early Childhood Intervention
  • Inclusive Settings
  • Supported Settings and
  • Gifted Education
The degree is structured to give you considerable flexibility so you can build your own program based on your specific needs and interests. This postgraduate degree gives you sound practical skills for working with children and young people with additional needs (from birth to secondary school age) that derive from a sound theoretical base and understanding of pedagogy. It is also committed to the importance of teachers working collaboratively with students, families and other professionals to set goals and achieve best outcomes. The program is grounded in an understanding of and commitment to evidence-based practice and emphasises the teacher’s roles as researcher, team member, leader and advocate.
