I am doing the HSC this year and want to be an early childhood teacher. What course should I do?
School leavers should apply for the Bachelor of Social Science Pathway to Early Childhood Teaching. This course provides you with the undergraduate pathway to the postgraduate Master of Teaching Birth to Twelve Years or Master of Teaching Birth to Five Years.
Once you have completed the Bachelor of Social Science Pathway to Early Childhood you have guaranteed entry into the Master of Teaching Birth-12 Years which provides you with a combined early childhood and primary teaching qualification. With the B. Social Science plus the Master of Teaching Birth – 12 Years you will be qualified to teach in early childhood services and from Kindergarten to Year 6 in primary schools.
If you want to work in early childhood services only you can choose to take an early exit from the Master of Teaching and exit with a Master of Teaching Birth-5 years. This will provide you with a 4 year early childhood teaching qualification appropriate for teaching in long day care, preschool and integrated child and family services.
How do I apply for the Bachelor of Social Science Pathway to Early Childhood Teaching?
Local students must apply through the Universities Admission Centre (UAC) – see www.uac.edu.au.
International students should apply to the UWS International Office. Application forms and information on admissions are available at www.uws.edu.au/international/admissions. International students must meet IELTS standards.

Graduates
I have an undergraduate degree and want to be able to teach in early childhood settings and in primary schools. What degree should I do?
The Master of Teaching Birth-12 provides you with a recognised teaching qualification for primary teaching from Kindergarten to Year 6 as well as for early childhood services. This is the same as a Master of Teaching Primary but in addition you will have a qualification that enables you to teach in preschools in Department of Education and private schools as well as in long day care. Graduates who have only a primary qualification are not able to work in preschools or long day care.
With the increasing focus on the importance of the early years and the move towards the employment of 4 year university qualified early childhood teachers in early childhood services you will have a qualification that is in high demand.
I want to work in early childhood services only. What course should I do?
The Master of Teaching Birth to 12 Years has the option of an early exit with the Master of Teaching Birth to 5 Years. This degree will equip you to work as an early childhood teacher in prior to school services. With a Master of Teaching Birth-5 Years you will have the status of a 4 year qualified early childhood teacher.
How do I apply for the Master of Teaching Birth-12 or Birth-5?
Current UWS students can apply directly through UWS via the direct into teaching process. All other applicants must apply through the Universities Admission Centre (UAC) – see www.uac.edu.au.
International students should apply to the UWS International Office. Application forms and information on admissions are available at www.uws.edu.au/international/admissions. International students must meet IELTS standards.
For more information about studying at UWS including course information, English language requirements, intakes, tuitions fees, assessment methods, accommodation options, and living in Australia, please visit www.uws.edu.au/international or contact internationalstudy@uws.edu.au.
What are the requirements for acceptance into the Master of Teaching Birth-12?
Applicants must have an appropriate undergraduate degree that includes at least 8 units of curriculum content across at least three different areas – e.g. English, mathematics, human society, science, physical education and health, or creative arts. Applicants who have at least 4 units of curriculum content in their undergraduate degree may be accepted but will have to complete additional curriculum content units as non-award study before they are eligible to graduate from the Master of Teaching Birth – 12 Years.
All applications will be assessed by the Universities Admission Centre and any requirements for additional study will be advised by UAC.
I have completed the UWS Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies. Which course do I apply for to be an early childhood and/or primary teacher?
If you have completed the BECS you have guaranteed entry into the new Master of Teaching Birth – 12 Years. You can choose to exit early with the Master of Teaching Birth – 5 Years and teach in prior to school services or complete the Master of Teaching Birth-12 Years to obtain a dual qualification for early childhood and primary teaching.
As graduates of the BECS you have guaranteed entry into the Master of Teaching B-12.
How long is the Master of Teaching Birth-12?
The length of the course depends on your undergraduate degree. Students who have completed an undergraduate degree that includes early childhood education units may be eligible for advanced standing and will be able to complete the degree in a shorter time. See the course structures below.
