NSW Institute Of Teachers Accreditation and Eligibility Requirements For Master Of Teaching Graduates

Accreditation and eligibility to teach in a NSW school is based on:

• Appropriate preliminary undergraduate studies (see below), and a
• Teacher education qualification that has been approved by the NSW Institute of Teachers such as the Master of Teaching at UWS

The full requirements for undergraduate subject content requirements for teaching in a NSW Primary or Secondary School is available from the NSW Institute of Teachers

The requirements for Primary and Secondary teaching are different.

Preliminary undergraduate studies for Primary Teaching

As primary teachers are required to teach across all six Key Learning Areas your undergraduate degree should contain discipline studies in at least three of these key learning areas. ie Your undergraduate degree should comprise units that meet either of the following patterns:

• One full academic year (20 cr pts of study or two semester units) in four key learning areas listed below OR
• Two full academic years (40 cr pts of study or 4 semester units) in one key learning area and one full academic year (20 cr pts of study or 2 semester units) of study in two other key learning areas listed below.

The Key Learning Areas for Primary are:

2) Meet all requirements of your BA key program
3) Follow the requirements of the Education Studies Major BUT
4) Enrol in 4 units from the Master of Teaching (Primary) to replace 4 education units in the Education Major through MySR (Note: If there are difficulties then an on-line Rule Waiver will need to be submitted through HAL). The units were in 1608, and equivalents for units in the new degree. They are now the units in 1663 and include:

Frequently Asked Questions by BA Students (HAL = Humanities & Languages)

1. Can I / Should I change my key program so that I can get into the teaching degrees?
o The general answer is that there is no need to do so. Electives should enable 3 subject areas to be studied.

2. If I study the Psychology key program can I be a teacher?
o Answer- Yes, a Primary Teacher. Psychology units are counted in the Primary Science and Technology KLA. Refer other questions about Psychology key program to HAL courseadvicehal@uws.edu.au

3. I can’t enrol in …… (level 1 unit) what do I need to do?
o Rules about level 1 units are attached to the BA program and are regulated through MySR. Refer questions about level 1 units to HAL courseadvicehal@uws.edu.au

4. If I study these units …… can I get into Primary teaching?
o Answer – The minimum requirement is study in 3 subject areas (40 cr pts in one area and 20 cr pts in two other areas)

5. If I study these units …… can I get into Secondary teaching?
o Answer – The minimum requirement is study in one or two teaching areas as required by the NSW Institute of teachers.

6. I have NOT completed HSC level Mathematics. Is this a problem?
o Answer – No.

7. Can I defer or take six months off before I go into the Master of Teaching programs.
o Answer - The best option is to apply for the Master of Teaching program of your choice through a Straight Into Teaching session – ie a direct application to SOE. When you receive your offer you have a choice to accept, decline or defer to a later semester. If you wish to defer, there is a fee of $100 and instructions for how to pay are included in the online process.  If you leave UWS for 6 or 12 months you cannot apply directly. You will need to apply through UAC when you are ready to start the course.
