Primary Professional Experience Primary Program
Welcome to the University of Western Sydney Professional Experience Primary Program. As part of the Master of Teaching program, Preservice Teachers (Practicum Students) undertake two in-school practicum components; Professional Practice I (PPI) and Professional Practice II (PPII).
The Professional Experience Primary Programs (PPI and PPII) provide opportunities for Preservice Teachers to engage with teaching in a supportive and collegial environment and to develop their skills with the assistance of their Supervising Teacher (Classroom Teachers) in real time, within the school setting. Professional experience contributes to the knowledge gained at University as Preservice Teachers observe the educational theories and practices as they occur in the classroom setting and learn about, and learn to, use a range of teaching strategies to engage students.
The University and Schools work collaboratively to provide a quality professional experience for the Preservice Teachers. During the professional experience, Supervising Teachers undertake the day-to-day professional development of Preservice Teachers and are supported in this role by the University Advisors who work closely with both Supervising Teachers and Preservice Teachers.
Throughout the professional experience, Preservice Teachers work towards achieving the elements of the New South Wales Professional Teaching Standards. It is expected that by the end of their second Professional Experience (Professional Practice II: PPII) Preservice Teachers will demonstrate their attainment of the standards and following completion of the teacher education course, be classified as a Graduate Teacher according to the New South Wales Institute of Teachers.
