About Fast Forward
The Fast Forward Program is a partnership between the University of Western Sydney and Greater Western Sydney Schools which helps students to see the value of continuing their education through to year 12 and beyond. It began in 2004 and has continued to grow, offering the opportunity for enhanced academic and personal achievement to a large number of Greater Western Sydney students.
In 2006 the program was awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Excellence Award for University Engagement for its work with Year 10 to 12 students at the 11 schools in the program at that time.

The program was expanded in 2008 to include students from Year 9 through to 12, to target pupils before they reach academic crossroads such as decisions regarding continuing into senior school and subsequent subject choice that may impact on future career decisions.
In 2009, the Fast Forward program expanded to include 22 High School Partners as part of the UWS Schools Strategic Plan. Further expansion will see 53 High Schools and approximately 2400 students participate in the program in 2013.
Aims of the program:
- To increase GWS school students’ engagement in learning and the completion of year 12
- To develop students’ confidence, knowledge, skills and educational attainment
- To enhance GWS students’ awareness of post school education opportunities
- To promote the benefits of lifelong learning, vis-à-vis life opportunities, to students and their families
- To improve the participation of GWS students in higher education.

This program aims to increase the higher education participation rates of students in the Greater West by enhancing students’ knowledge, skills and educational attainment. The Fast Forward program gives students a greater preparedness for participation and success in higher education.
This program is grounded in the growing body of research and evidence that indicates that non-traditional students can be assisted to consider tertiary education as an option if entrenched attitudes are moderated by a range of experiences.
The Fast Forward program seeks to engage selected students from year 9 with UWS staff, students and resources and work with them through to year 12. Through interactive, fun and practical activities, students are given a positive experience and understanding of University life and other pathways to achieve their goals for the future.
As part of the program, students are able to take part in a series of experiential learning opportunities relevant to their needs and stage of development. Those students choosing to study at UWS after completing their schooling are also assisted in their transition to University and given the opportunity to be role models to younger students in the program, further developing their leadership skills.
