Master of Creative Music Therapy

As a graduate of this program you are eligible to apply to register with the Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA), which qualifies you to practice professionally in Australia as a Registered Music Therapist (RMT).

The Master of Creative Music Therapy program at Western Sydney University takes an intentionally creative approach to training students to become career-ready music therapists.

Students develop the knowledge and ability to creatively apply their existing music skills therapeutically for individuals and groups, through improvisational (creating improvised music), re-creative (creatively using repertoire/songs), compositional (creating songs/music) and receptive (creative listening) methods. The Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA) competencies are taught, and learning across a range of music therapy approaches is included. Applicants from diverse backgrounds and experiences are warmly encouraged to apply. Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to register with the AMTA, which qualifies them to practice professionally in Australia as a Registered Music Therapist (RMT).

The learning activities for this program take place as on-campus lectorials, one day per week during semester time, with additional online synchronous and asynchronous learning activities delivered on other days. In addition, students are required to complete music therapy placements, which are offered flexibly as weekly, block or mixed modes.

Music therapy higher degree research programs are also available.

As a Registered Music Therapist (RMT), Sydney works with a broad population ranging from babies and young children in early intervention, children and adults with disabilities, and elderly in the aged care sector. "I thrive in witnessing the transformative power music has to empower individuals to meet their individual goals in a fun and motivating way, and greatly appreciate the Master of Creative Music Therapy which prepared me for this work."

Imtiaz Chowdhury (RMT), MCMT Graduate 2021

As a Registered Music Therapist, and Director of a thriving therapy practice in Western Sydney, Imtiaz says – ’I am deeply grateful to Western Sydney University for setting me on a path to assist individuals with diverse needs.’ Inspired by this journey, he actively advocates for mental health and disability awareness, sharing his experiences to reduce stigma and promote resilience within the community.

Mark Flemming (RMT), MCMT Graduate 2017

As a Registered Music Therapist and business owner, Mark employs a number of Music Therapists throughout the Sydney area, specialising in Aged Care and Palliative Care.  A vocalist, guitarist and pianist, Mark graduated from a Bachelor of Music at Western Sydney University and through the Masters of Creative Music Therapy course, took his musical skills and turned them into a career helping and supporting others.

Jack Thomas (RMT), MCMT Graduate 2018 

As a Registered Music Therapist, Jack has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including Chris O'Brien Lifehouse cancer hospital, The Sydney Children's Hospital Network's Westmead and Randwick sites, and The Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, while also running a private practice with a focus on mental health. Jack credits the MCMT program at WSU for providing him with the tools, knowledge and invaluable industry connections to have a successful and fulfilling career as an RMT.
