Requirements

Academic requirements

Admission to the University of Western Sydney is highly competitive and is on the basis of academic merit. International students are required to meet the same standards as Australian residents. The following qualifications are the minimum acceptable levels for eligibility and you should not assume that because you have met the minimum level you will be offered a place at the university. It should be noted that certain courses may have higher entry requirements. 

Undergraduate requirements


Australian Qualifications
All States: Successful completion of the State Higher Secondary Examination with a minimum University Admissions   Index (UAI) of 60.00 OR successful completion of at least one year of a TAFE Advanced/Associate Diploma.

International Baccalaureate
IB with a minimum of 24 over six subjects.

Argentina
Bachillerato Especializado with an average grade of good (Bueno) or above

Bangladesh
Higher School Certificate with a grade of 850 or above, or University of London GCE 'A' level Examination* or completion of one year of study at a recognised university with passing grades.

Brazil
Successful completion of one year of study at a recognised university with passing grades or above.

Canada
For most provinces: completion of Year 12 and an examination result in the top third of the graduating class. For Ontario, the Ontario Secondary School Diploma with an average of 65%  in six Ontario Academic Course Credits or equivalent. For Quebec, completion of the College d'Enseignement General et Professional (CEGEP) Diploma. For all Provinces, students must satisfy the requirements for entry to a Canadian University.

Chile
Successful completion of the Academic Secondary Education Certificate (Licendia de Educacion Media) with an average grade of good (Bueno} or above.

China PRC
National University Entrance Examination score  of  500  or  above  or Senior Middle School 80% average or above..

Colombia
Bachillerato 70% +

Ethiopia
SuccessfuI completion of the Ethiopian School Leaving Certificate Examination with a minimum of 70%.

Fiji
Successful completion of Form 7 with over 70% average. Or 1 year full time with C average in USP Foundation Year.

France
Successful cornpletion of Baccalaureate with a minimum grade of good.

Ghana
GCE 'A' level passes (see footnote below). See below

Germany
Successful cornpletion of Abitur or Reifezeugnis or equivalent.

Hong Kong
Hong Kong 'A' level Examination passes.  See below

India
All India Higher School Certificate awarded by CBSE, or equivalent State
Secondary School Board with a First Division pass OR ISC - First Division pass Maharashtra HSC - 65%+ Karnaka HSC - 65%+ GCE A levels.

lndonesia
SMU 7.5 average in STTB, 6.8 average in NEM.

Iran
Passes in Higher Education Entrance Examination at a level required to gain
admission  to a recognised Iranian university.

Israel
Successfui completion of Higher Secondary Matriculation (Bagrut) with a grade point average of 6.5.

Japan
Kotogakko Certifcate with a grade point average of 3.0 in academic subjects.

Jordan
Successful completion of the Tawjihi with an average of 80%.

Kenya
GCE 'A' levels passes. See below

Korea
Senior High School Diploma with a GPA of 3.5 or qualified for university entrance in South Korea in the SAECE.

Macau
GCE 'A' levels passes. See below

Malaysia
STPM aggregate score of 6 points in the best three principal level papers OR
London GCE/Cambridge 'A' Level passes. Or UEC of the Malaysian Independent Chinese Secondary Schools with an aggregate of 18 points in six subjects OR the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) with a score of 53/70 or equivalent Or a Polytechnic Diploma or equivalent.

Mauritius
GCE 'A' level passes in three subjects. See below

Mexico
Successful completion of one year of study at a recognised university with passing grades or above.

New Zealand
Completion of NCEA.  Scores  will  be  converted  to  UAC  equivalents.

Norway
Successful completion of Vitnemal den Vidergaende Skole with a minimum grade 3.5 pass.

Pakistan
Successful completion of Higher School Certificate or Intermediate Certificate, First Division pass.

Papua New Guinea
The PNG Higher School Certificate with a minimum of five subjects and at least three 'B' grade passes.

Philippines
A percentile score above 75 in the National College Entrance Examination OR completion of the first year of study at a recognised university.

Poland
Matura/Swiadectwo Dojrzalosci with a minimum grade 4 pass.

Russia/Independent States of the
former Soviet Union

Successful completion of one year of study at a recognised university with passing grades or above.

Singapore
The Singapore-Cambridge 'A' Level Examination passes or successful completion of a Polytechnic Diploma or equivalent.

South Africa
Successful completion of the Senior Certificate with Matriculation exemption with a minimum grade C pass.

Spain
Either a Bachillerato Unificado Polyvalente with a grade average of 'good' or above OR a Curso de Orientacion Universitaria with a grade of 'good' or above.

Sri Lanka

Passes in three subjects in the Sri Lanka 'A' Level Examination with at least two at " Credit" level or above.

Sweden
Successful completion of at least 3 year upper secondary school Avgangsbetyg with GPA of 3.5.

Taiwan
Taiwan Senior High School Leaving Certificate with 70% a pass in the Joint Four Year College and University Entrance Examination, or successful completion of the program at the National University Preparatory School for Overseas Chinese Students.

Tanzania
Successful completion of one year of study at a recognised university with passing grades or above.

Thailand
Matayom V1  with a grade point average of 3.0 or equivalent.

Turkey
Devlet Lise Diplomasi or Lise Bitrime Diplomasi 8 and above.

United Arab Emirates
Successful completion of one year of a study at a recognised University OR successful completion of a recognised Foundation Program.

USA
High School Graduation Diploma with SAT score above 500 in both Verbal and Maths OR ACT composite score greater than 18.

Vietnam
Successful completion of one year of study at a recognised university with passing grades or above.

For Cambridge. Hong Kong, Singapore, GCE or University of London A Level results students are required to pass three A level subjects at least two of which have been passed at one sitting, with an aggregate score of 6 points or passes in two advanced level subjects at one sitting wirh an aggregate score of 6 points where A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1.


Postgraduate Requirements

Graduate Diplomas
An Applicant for a Graduate Diploma Program must either hold:

  •   an Australian Bachelor degree or
  •   an overseas qualification from a recognised university or tertiary institution that is equivalent to an Australian Bachelor degree

  Some programs may also require evidence of relevant work experience.

Masters by Coursework degrees
An applicant for a Masters coursework degree program must either hold:

  •   an Australian Bachelor degree or
  •   an overseas qualification from a recognised university or tertiary institution that is equivalent to an Australian Bachelor degree or
  •   a Graduate Diploma from a recognised tertiary institution or university

Postgraduate Research degrees

Masters by Research – Masters (Honours)
The focus of this degree program is a major research project. The topic of the project is usually chosen by the student, and the research activity is conducted under academic supervision. The program aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop skills and experience in research methodology and specific research and evaluation techniques as well as the capacity to prepare and present academic papers for publication and public presentation.

  An applicant to the degree of Masters (Honours) must either hold:

  •   a Bachelor (Honours) degree from an Australian University with evidence of a demonstrated capacity for research or
  •   an overseas degree from a recognised university or tertiary institution that is equivalent to an Australian Bachelor (Honours) degree or
  •   qualifications that are recognised as equivalent to those listed above.


Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Doctoral research programs (PhD) require the completion of a major original research project in a chosen academic field. The program is conducted independently, under academic supervision. Candidates are expected to uncover new knowledge either by the discovery of new facts, the formulation of theories, or the innovative re-interpretation of known data and established ideas. The outcome of the research project is presented by way of thesis and is expected to make a significant original contribution to knowledge in the chosen field. The Doctoral programs support further development of research skills and experience and candidates are expected to present academic papers within professional fora and to publish academic papers.

  An applicant for a PhD program must either hold:

  •   a Masters (Honours) degree by research or
  •   a Bachelor (Hons) degree with Class 1 or Class 2 division 1 honours or
  •   a demonstrated capacity for research in a discipline deemed to be acceptable to the university

Please note:

All Research degree students must submit a Research Proposal with their Application for Admission. This proposal will be assessed by senior academic staff for relevance to UWS research programs, availability of appropriate supervisors, and the ability of the applicant to carry out high-level research. It may take several weeks before students receive approval.
