Campus life committees

Campus life committees: what are they?

In 2001, the University established terms of reference determining the operation of Campus Life Committees (CILC) to be established on each UWS campus.

The idea behind the Committees was to establish a forum for each campus community to provide advice to the Provost about matters affecting student and staff experience on that campus.

Each Committee is made up of 'local' staff and students? all campus schools and divisions have been invited to send representatives and student participation is actively encouraged, so that the groups truly do represent the campus community.

The Committees see their ultimate objective to be enhancing campus life and engendering a stronger sense of campus identity and they have pursued this in many different ways, reflecting the diversity and vitality of the six UWS campuses.

A number of Committees have funded and run activities such as student/staff breakfasts, Health Awareness week activities, distribution of bottled water and Chupa Chups to students in exam week, lunchtime entertainment and campus fitness competitions. Other activities include bringing the Red Cross Blood Bank on campus, the Reconciliation Art project and the 'Celebrating Sustainability Fair'.

The Committees also contribute to improvement of facilities. For example:

  • Seat belts were funded for the student minibus at Hawkesbury
  • A 'Disabilities Access Survey' was conducted at the Penrith campus
  • Increasing safety on campus - improved lighting
  • Beautification of the grounds.
CLCs conducted Welcome Week barbeques for new students and the Committees are currently looking at greater cooperation to provide similar coordinated activities for the UWS calendar.
