Harvey Norman Scholarship Program
The University of Western Sydney welcomes the generous support of Harvey Norman in funding the Harvey Norman Scholarship Program.
This scholarship program aims to recognise excellence in Greater Western Sydney and help students realise their potential, with a total of thirteen exceptional UWS students named as Harvey Norman scholars for 2015. As part of the program each student will receive a scholarship for the duration of his or her degree.
These future leaders, who are studying a wide variety of courses at UWS including medical science, midwifery, psychology, teaching, criminology and community justice, and computer science, come from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
What unites them is the aspiration to create a better life for themselves and their families through education, and a shared desire to succeed through hard work and determination.
One of those is Arezo Masoomy, a second-year medical science student, who came to Australia as a refugee from Afghanistan, and has excelled in her studies.
Arezo, who is the first in her family to go to university, would ultimately like study medicine, and said the financial support will help her achieve her dreams.
"Receiving this scholarship will help me with my study expenses, particularly the costs of textbooks and tuition fees," says Arezo.
Katie Page, a UWS Foundation Council member, said she is proud to support talented students like Arezo, as well as UWS's unique place in the region.
'Harvey Norman is so proud to be rewarding hard work and furthering the potential of students at the University of Western Sydney," said Ms Page.
"Western Sydney is where Harvey Norman's success began in Auburn, and it is fitting to be involved in supporting the University that is so vital to securing the region's future success.
"I encourage business and community to get behind UWS by supporting scholarships for students who represent this region – they are bright, hardworking, determined and diverse."
UWS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Barney Glover, said supporting higher education through the gift of scholarships creates real impact in our community, and transforms individuals' lives.
"Higher education provides a foundation on which people can fulfill their aspirations, support themselves and their families, build their careers, and ultimately helps communities to grow," said Professor Glover.
"The University of Western Sydney community is very grateful to Harvey Norman for their generosity, in support of the University's commitment to making a lasting difference in the Greater Western Sydney region – a region which is home to nearly 2 million Australians, and a major driving force in Australia's knowledge economy."By supporting our students, they are contributing to and sharing in the University's – indeed, the entire GWS region's – future potential and success."
