September 2011
On 21 September over fifty UWS supporters gathered at the Blacktown Mt Druitt Clinical School and Research Centre for an exclusive preview of this new state of the art teaching and research facility.
Based at Blacktown Hospital and boasting an impressive three level research facility, the Centre has been chosen as a leading national site to deliver innovative multidisciplinary education to future health providers in Western Sydney.
Guests at the event were given a behind the scenes tour of the facility and the research and teaching initiatives now headquartered in Blacktown. Senior Academics, including Clinical Dean, Professor Peter Zelas, Professor of Surgery, Marc Gladman and Chair of Medicine, Professor Mark McLean provided insight into the various functions of the Centre, including Wet Labs, the Clinical Trial unit, the Library, cutting edge technological resources and tutorial and teaching facilities.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Janice Reid AM, Chairman of the UWS Foundation, Mr John Phillips AO, and the new Dean of Medicine, Professor Annemarie Hennessey spoke about their vision for the future of UWS, and the University’s commitment to the Blacktown region.
Promising UWS Medical students and scholarship recipients also attended the event and joined the tours to provide an insight into what it means to have access to these first class facilities.
Also announced at the event was a recent gift from former CEO of Blacktown Hospital, Mr Derek Howes and his wife Shirley. The gift of $50,000 will support the establishment of an endowment for the annual awarding of the prestigious Derek and Shirley Howes Prize for Medicine. The prize will recognise and inspire our future medical practitioners and instil in them the importance of continuing education – a key theme of the new facility at Blacktown.
