China Australia Literary Forum 2013

The second China Australia Literary Forum took place in Beijing from 2-3 April 2013, following the success of the inaugural CALF event held in Sydney, Australia in 2011. The program was co hosted by the Chinese Writers Association; the Writing and Society research Centre, University of Western Sydney; The JM Coetzee Centre for Creative Practice, Adelaide University; and the Australian Embassy in Beijing.

UWS design students take out international film competition
Two short films produced by students from the School of Humanities and Communication Arts ‘Lights, Camera, Action’ by Marc Cerrafon, and ‘Save the Power’ by Adam Dionsio, Garmon Weng, Benjamin Baggay and Nyleve Alejandrino, have been selected as category winners at an international design competition focused on raising awareness of climate change.

UWS Student Wins Annual Chinese Competition

A UWS student, Miss May Zaomoe, won First Prize in the 2013 NSW Chinese Bridge Competition on 26 May - an annual global Chinese language and culture competition for non-Chinese learners. May Zaomoe is currently in her third year of Chinese language study at UWS. She is to represent Australia in China at the final competition in August.

UWS appoints Australia’s first Professor in Digital Humanities
The University of Western Sydney has appointed Australia’s first Professor in Digital Humanities. Professor Paul Arthur takes up the new position in the School of Humanities and Communication Arts.

Minister Bowen visits School of Humanities and Communication Arts Facilities

New Federal Minister for Tertiary Education, Chris Bowen, visited the University’s Werrington South site of the Penrith campus for a meet and greet with students, and a tour of the Television Sydney (TVS) broadcast studios and the production facilities of the University’s School of Humanities and Communication Arts.

Sydney Review of Books: A new avenue for literary criticism in Australia
The Writing and Society Research Centre at the University of Western Sydney has launched Sydney Review of Books – a free online literary review that focuses on Australian writers and writing.

Prof Gail Jones wins People’s Choice award
Gail Jones, a Professor in Writing at the Writing and Society Research Centre (opens in new window)
who joined the University in 2008, was awarded the People’s Choice award for her book, Five Bells, published by Random House Books Australia.

Dr Mailhammer's Research Success: Amurdak – An Endangered Language () (opens in a new window)
Dr Robert Mailhammer is studying Amurdak, an endangered language of Northern Arnhem Land. His project, 'Amurdak – An Endangered Language', has been funded by the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London through its Grant Endangered Languages Academic Programme.
