Associate Professor Kaye Shumack

Kaye Shumack

Associate Professor Kaye Shumack has a background in photography, visual design and media. She researches in the areas of visual language, genres and media representations, often working collaboratively in interdisciplinary research contexts. Her work deals broadly with the strategic and critical role of visual media within communication design. This includes issues such as: collaborative processes of 'making' as forms of design practice for teaching and research; the role of the situated self, difference, and cultural identity, in designing for public and private spheres; the value of design as a practice for visualising research findings. Recent research explores the usage of a range of visual mapping methods for exploration of human and non-human assemblages, networks and contexts. Projects using mapping include emotion mapping of local transport routes; the dynamic interactions that take place in community garden sites and the routes taken by dog walkers in a local park.

Associate Professor Shumack's current research projects include:

  • Mapping of the site of Callan Park, Leichhardt, Sydney, to identify affective and temporal flows of local usage.
  • Visualisation of qualitative data gathered about activities occurring in local community gardens as maps.
  • Collaboration on a consultancy report for Parramatta City Council on local community gardens and the support systems that underpin them.
  • Guest editor of a special issue on mapping and design Design Philosophy Papers.
  • Co-Convenor of an interdisciplinary workshop  titled 'Mapping Ecologies of Place:Local, Virtual, Digital and joint guest editor of a special issue on mapping of Global Media Journal (Australia).
  • Director and co-producer of a Documentary about the 'Citizen's Parliament' which took place in Canberra, February 2009, as a national research initiative in collaboration with newDemocracy.
  • Collaboration on diverCities: A Global Collaboration Space for the Intercultural Dialogue project. This web-based initiative explores the uses of visual story-telling as a design approach for researching inter-cultural dialogues.
