Research Degrees
The School of Humanities and Communication Arts is committed to the training of new researchers and provides a stimulating and dynamic environment for higher degree by research (HDR) candidates. The School conducts research in a number of different areas, allowing students to explore pure, applied or experimental methodologies.
Prospective Students
If you are interested in researching within the many areas covered by out School, we advise you to do the following:
- Consider what course is the best for you by taking into account the information in the next section.
- Read about our research areas and the staff involved in each discipline. You will also want to look at the web pages of our research concentrations: Writing and Society Research Centre, Justice Research Group, and Philosophy@UWS.
- Contact the relevant staff member/s to discuss your research project and your research proposal.
What course can I apply for?
In order to be eligible to apply to a research degree, you need to have a relevant undergraduate or post graduate degree. If you do not hold a degree, you may want to find out more about the degrees by coursework offered by UWS. See Future Students for more information.
- If you hold a relevant undergraduate degree, you may wish to enrol in an undergraduate Honours degree as a pathway to higher degrees by research. Within our School, you have the option of Honours programmes in Arts, Languages and Linguistics, Communication and Music.
- In the interpreting and translation area, if you hold a relevant post graduate coursework degree, you need to enrol in our Master of Arts (Translation and Interpreting Studies).
- If you already have a research degree, you can apply directly to a Master of Arts (Honours) or PhD.

International applicants may apply for admission at any time. The application form is available at UWS International Forms (PhD, Masters Honours). Information on Course Fees is also available. If successful, international applicants’ enrolment for a session must commence before the corresponding census day of 31 March or 31 August.
