Studying For A PhD

There are more than forty students studying for a PhD at HIE, creating a vibrant community of passionate students. We offer significant support for our students in the form of access to facilities and supplies, mentoring opportunities, professional development and much more. 

We suggest that your first step is to discuss your interests and professional directions with one of our scientists - make contact with them directly.

To discuss scholarships for studying at HIE, please talk to one of our academics first and find an area of research that suits your interests.

Applying For A Scholarship

There are scholarship opportunities available throughout the year.

We recommend that you discuss your interests with scientists in a field close to your interests and professional experience.

The main opportunity for gaining a PhD scholarship is via the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) program which is open for application until October each year. There are also mid-year rounds.

The Research Exchange Program is designed for established scientists to visit HIE for an extended period of time to collaborate within the Institute.
