HIE Honours Scholarships

The Institute will offer a number of Honours Scholarships for students who wish to undertake a Bachelor of Science (Honours) program in a field of research related to plant science.  Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis. The selection criteria for scholarships are:

  • academic merit (GPA greater than 5.000 and/or performance in third year subjects)
  • appropriateness of fit with the core research of the Institute - refer to the Project List (PDF, 450.55 KB) (opens in a new window)
  • offer of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) place within the University
  • funding available

The Award shall carry a tax-free stipend of $5,000 to be paid via two instalments over the tenure of the Award. The first instalment will be paid to the student following the Autumn session HECS census date (31 March) and the final instalment will be paid following the Spring session HECS census date (31 August). The level of the stipend will not be reduced during the period of the Award. The second instalment will be paid to the Student upon written confirmation from the Director of the Institute that the student has maintained good progress toward completion of the degree. In addition, the Award includes up to $2,000 for consumables.

Students who apply for a HIE Honours Scholarship must concurrently apply for a UWS Honours Scholarship. If the UWS Honours Scholarship application is successful, the Institute application will be void, but the $2,000 in consumable expenditure will still be made available.

Part-time tenure is granted only where an applicant is able to demonstrate heavy care commitments or a medical condition which would preclude full-time study, including:

  1. carer responsibilities for a pre-school child; or
  2. carer responsibilities for school-aged children as a sole parent with limited access to outside support; or
  3. carer responsibilities for an invalid or disabled spouse, child or parent; or
  4. a medical condition which limits the capacity to undertake full-time study (supported by medical certification).

Part-time Awards are not available to applicants seeking to undertake paid employment on a full-time, or on a substantial part-time basis, and recipients are subject to the same restrictions on employment as full-time Award holders. Award holders approved to study part-time may revert to full-time study at any time with the permission of the Institution. Stipends for part-time studies are not tax-exempt.

Applications for HIE Honours Scholarships will again open in early December 2013.
