Description
Each year countries such as Australia, Canada, the UK and the United States
accept humanitarian refugees. In total, refugees who are accepted into Western
countries represent only 2 percent of the annual total seeking resettlement.
Although these numbers are small, the arrival and settlement of refugees has
been divisively used by major political Parties for point-scoring, accusing
refugees of ‘illegal’ behaviour, especially if they arrive by boat or cross a
border on foot.

'Refugee and Immigrant Students: Achieving Equity in
Education'
, edited by Florence McCarthy and Margaret Vickers from UWS, addresses
the narrow focus of Australia's border protection policies and calls for action
that confronts the real, global scale of the refugee problem.

Speakers: Professor Raewyn Connell, Sydney University
