- Description
Professor James Scobbie is a Professor of Speech Science and Director of the Clinical Audiology, Speech and Language (CASL) Research Centre at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. He will be presenting "An inside view on speech production in phonetic, sociolinguistic, psycholinguistic and acquisition research".
Abstract: Recent advances in ultrasound imaging of speech production are leading towards a huge expansion of interest in articulatory phonetics. Together with other imaging and articulatory measurement techniques, ultrasound can provide both detailed quantitative information on speech production and provides a convenient qualitative method for fieldwork, child language acquisition studies, and sociophonetic research. In this talk I will exemplify its potential with some recent and ongoing work in collaboration with colleagues at QMU using a high-speed ultrasound system.
