Description

Seminar title: Global patterns in plant defence: are tropical plants nastier?

The idea that plant species from the tropics are better defended against herbivores than are species from higher latitudes is very widely accepted. We tested this idea using 1) a meta-analysis of the published literature, and 2) a field study that included 301 species from 75 sites worldwide.

Neither the meta-analysis, nor the field study supported the hypothesis that tropical plants are better defended than are plants from higher latitudes. If anything, plants from higher latitudes are actually better defended. I will conclude with a light rant about how much harder it is to get your work published when your results go against the general consensus.
