Title of the seminar: Analysis and Design of Semi-Rigid Frames in a Composite Structure

Brief abstract of the seminar:

Frame analysis and design of a composite structure consisting of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns and steel beams are carried out based on the assumption that the joints are either perfectly rigid or pinned. A fully rigid connection can transfer the end moment of the beam to the column, and there is no relative rotation between the beam and the column. On the other hand, a pinned connection is used to transfer the shear force only to the column, and the end moment of the beam is assumed to be zero by allowing the rotation of the joint. In reality, the majority of practical joints are semi-rigid, and its influence cannot be ignored in some cases. In general, the analysis and design are more complicated for semi-rigid frames compared to rigid or flexible frames. This presentation will highlight the analysis and design procedure for semi-rigid frames consisting of CFST columns and steel beams utilising blind-bolted endplate connections. The analysis and design are performed using the frame analysis and design software, SAP2000. The semi-rigid connections are then designed using blind-bolted endplate connections based on the frame analysis results.
