Description
Dr Jon Brock, Research Fellow from Macquarie University will be presenting at our weekly research seminar “Coping with heterogeneity in autism research”. Abstract: It is becoming ever clearer that autism is an extremely heterogeneous condition in terms of both clinical presentation and causal mechanisms. Yet autism research typically considers only the average result for participants with autism, and ignores heterogeneity entirely. Our recent research adopts a different strategy, harnessing these individual differences to investigate why some (but not all) individuals with autism have language comprehension, face recognition, and auditory perception difficulties. This approach holds promise for other domains of autism research, but also brings a new set of methodological challenges to consider.
