Title of the seminar: Sustainability and Innovation in Geopolymer Concrete Construction: From Materials to Structures
Brief abstract of the seminar: Geopolymer concretes have emerged as novel engineering materials with the potential to form a substantial element of an environmentally sustainable construction and building products industry. In this presentation we overview the use of geopolymer concrete in sustainable design and construction. The research efforts undertaken at University of New South Wales on geopolymer concrete, at the material and at the structural levels, will be presented. It will reflect on the journey taken and the innovations introduced. The presentation summarises the development of a rational mix design approach and manufacturing process of geopolymer concrete, structural performance of steel fibre reinforced geopolymer concrete and properties and application of lightweight geopolymer concrete. Lastly, an on-going research programme to investigate the behaviour of geopolymer concrete exposed to elevated temperatures is outlined and some preliminary results will be presented.
Biography: Dr Tian Sing Ng is a research associate at the Centre for Infrastructure Engineering and Safety University of New South Wales. He is a Chartered Professional Engineer and Register of Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) in Civil and Structural colleges with over seven years of professional and research experience. His research interests include and bio-composite materials, structure rehabilitation using FRP, sustainable materials and concrete technology such as geopolymer concrete and fibre reinforced concrete. He is currently investigating the behaviour of geopolymer concrete subjected to elevated temperature and long term structural behaviour of geopolymer and fibre reinforced concretes.
