Research Program

The ICS research program consists of eight themes responding to key challenges facing culture and society in the 21st century. Each theme interrogates key scholarly concepts and policies, such as intercultural dialogue, institutional governance, economic and cultural globalisation, heritage, creative industries, and city cultures. The themes act as a focus for joint research projects, workshops and conferences, and continue the work undertaken by the Centre for Cultural Research in these areas.

The Institute is also committed to methodological innovation, and runs two Knowledge Practice Strands focused on, first, the world-making role of methods and need to innovate in how scholarly knowledge practices translate to policy, business, community and media; and second, the development of innovative digital research methods that will enhance the scope and flexibility of cultural research. Finally, an important element of the Institute’s mission is the Australian Cultural Fields 'hinge', which connects the strands and themes by investigating key transformations in the social organisation of cultural activities in contemporary Australia in the light of its changing place in global processes and relations.
