The Institute for Infrastructure Engineering hosted the Inaugural IIE annual conference at the Mantra, Parramatta on 30 November 2012. A total of 20 presentations were given across the four IIE themes, Infrastructure Systems, Infrastructure Computations, Infrastructure Materials and Infrastructure Health Monitoring. Four external keynote speakers were invited to present, each on one of the themes. The keynote speakers and their presentations were:

  • Dr Stephen Hicks, Manager Structural Systems, Heavy Engineering Research Association, New Zealand, "Structural systems and composite bridges"
  • Professor Guowei Ma, School of Civil & Resource Engineering, University of Western Australia, Perth, Australia, “Construction materials (concrete/steel/rock) at high strain rates”
  • Professor David Fletcher, School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, The University of Sydney, Australia, "CFD in Infrastructure Engineering"
  • Professor Gangbing Song, University of Houston, USA, "Piezoceramic based smart aggregates – intelligent multifunctional sensors for infrastructure"

The event attracted more than 40 participants including IIE staff, engineering PhD and Honours students, industrial partners and visitors from external organisations. Overall, the conference was a success with much positive feedback received from conference participants.
