Events

At UWS, we recognise the valuable contribution Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians make to the community.

The University holds events throughout the year which celebrate the rich culture and history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

This year, National Reconciliation Week was marked with a Sorry Day ceremony at the UWS Bankstown campus. The ceremony was attended by staff and students, many of whom are current AREP Bachelor of Education (Primary) students.

2011 NAIDOC Week, with the theme 'Change: the next step is ours' and will be celebrated on selected campuses with such activities as basket weaving, traditional dance and bush tucker tasting. More information will be available in coming days.

The Yarramundi Lecture will take place on Thursday 7th July. This event will be hosted by the Vice-Chancellor, with the keynote speaker being Leah Armstrong, Chief Executive Officer, Reconciliation Australia. Additional activities prior to the delivery of the lecture  (1-3pm) will be undertaken on the campus to showcase local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. There will also be an art exhibition in the Margot Hardy Gallery, Bankstown Campus by Trish Amichi which brings together Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and children from 27 remote and marginalised communities in 15 countries around the world. The exhibition is called 'Big ones, Little ones - Thoughts, Feelings, Imagination'.
