Indigenous Scholarship Opportunities

The University of Western Sydney is not just about obtaining an education, we also strive to engage our Indigenous students to get involved and make a difference to the University community.

UWS has a range of scholarships on offer for both new and continuing Indigenous students. With a multitude of scholarships available, you can take advantage of the many opportunities available.

Indigenous Scholarships made possible by the Commonwealth

Indigenous Access Scholarship

The Indigenous Access Scholarships (IAS) is an initiative that provides assistance to Indigenous Australians wishing to access higher education, particularly those who need to relocate from rural and remote areas to access an approved higher education enabling course or an undergraduate course.

Value: In 2008 IAS is valued at $4 080. Successful applicants will receive a one-off payment.

Indigenous Scholarships made possible by UWS

Badanami Start-up Grant

The Badanami Start-up Grant was established to assist all commencing Indigenous student with commencing tertiary studies. The Indigenous start-up grant is a one-off payment to all commencing Indigenous at UWS.

Value: $2 000 one-off payment at the commencement of the degree

UWS Indigenous Achievement Scholarship

The UWS Indigenous Achievement Scholarship was founded to recognise, reward and harness the academic abilities of the University’s most talented Indigenous students, while at the same time supporting educational development activities and student involvement in Indigenous communities. Indigenous students who are currently enrolled or commencing at UWS for the very first time are encouraged to apply for a Indigenous Academic Excellence Scholarship.

Value: $5 000 per year, for up to five years ($2 500 per year for part-time equivalent)

Landcom Indigenous Scholarship

The Landcom Indigenous Scholarship was established to provide Indigenous students enrolled in a business related degree with the opportunity to gain on-the-job paid work experience, whilst undertaking their business studies.

Value:

  • $2 000.00 one-off initial payment to cover textbook and study tools;
  • $7 000.00 payment toward course costs
  • Up to $46 000 in paid work experience

The Slade Group Reconciliation Scholarship

The Slade Group are committed to providing ongoing opportunities for Indigenous students enrolled or commencing in an undergraduate Business related degree.

Value: $5 000 one-off payment at the commencement of the degree. For one year only.

Department of Sport and Recreation Scholarship

NSW Sport and Recreation’s purpose is to assist the people of NSW participate in sport and recreation, with a vision of a community that uses sport and recreation to improve its well being. This Indigenous Sport and Recreation Scholarship was established to provide ongoing opportunities for Indigenous students enrolled in a PDHPE or Sport and Exercise Science degree.

Value: $10 000 per year for up to three years.

Postgraduate Research Scholarships

Yarramundi Scholarship

The Yarramundi Scholarship aims to strengthen and support Indigenous participation in higher degree research at UWS. Two scholarships are available for candidates seeking admission to higher degree research at either Masters Honours or doctoral level.

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must first be able to demonstrate their Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage. The allocation of this scholarship is a competitive process and eligible applicants will initially be ranked according to academic merit using a metric endorsed by the UWS Research Studies Committee.
