2011 NAIDOC Week Quiz Winners

The NAIDOC Week Online Quiz 2011 was proudly sponsored by the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment and Engagement, and Student Support Services. Of the 438 entries received, 31 entries correctly answered all 10 multiple choice questions to be eligible to have their short answers judged by the University of Western Sydney Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment and Engagement Advisory Board Judging Panel who have selected the following Winners. 

1st prize: Apple iPad (16GB) and a Darug Information & Research Centre Resource Kit


Winner - Kathryn Watkinson 

Kathryn is a student at UWS. Below are her answers for the 3 short answer questions.

  1. What does NAIDOC mean to you?
    An opportunity to draw attention to the achievements of Indigenous Australians in this changing social and political landscape, which undeniably benefits society in clarifying misrepresentation of Indigenous representations.
  2. What does Reconciliation mean to you?
    Sombre acknowledgement of past atrocities, celebration of the many miles we have progressed together as a society, and looking to the future to greater equality for ALL Australians be they Indigenous or Non Indigenous.
  3. In your role, how do you contribute and celebrate NAIDOC Week at UWS?
    In 2009 emailed the Badanami Centre on a year 12 major work on “Boolaro: The Changing Perception and Positioning of Indigenous People in Australian Film”. 2010 attended Sorry Day commemoration at DoC’s Campbelltown. Also able to go to NAIDOC week celebration at uni.

Winner - Daniel Evans

Daniel is a student at UWS. Below are hisanswers for the 3 short answer questions.

  1. What does NAIDOC mean to you?
    The recognition, acknowledgement, celebration and expression of deep respect for a people who have suffered adversity, and have been largely forgotten in Australian history.
  2. What does Reconciliation mean to you?
    The simultaneous admission of wrong-doing and pledge to rebuild the lives of those who have suffered, and continue to suffer, through respect and empathy.
  3. In your role, how do you contribute and celebrate NAIDOC Week at UWS?
    By becoming more aware and informed through my study and participation in events and programs (such as ISSMP), I can change the misconceptions of Indigenous peoples in others.

Equal Winners - Dominika Weber UWS Student & Jan Brown UWS Staff member

There was a tie for 3rd place with student Dominika Weber and staff member Jan Brown finishing on equal points. Below are the answers to their short answer questions:

  1. What does NAIDOC mean to you?
    Acceptance of each other as equals and recognition of the rights and beliefs taken from the Indigenous.
  2. What does Reconciliation mean to you?
  3. Coming together as equals, accepting and recognising each person’s beliefs and appreciating these.
  4. In your role, how do you contribute and celebrate NAIDOC Week at UWS?
    I treat everyone as equal and appreciate what the Indigenous lost so I can be an Australian.
Jan Brown
  1. What does NAIDOC mean to you?
    Naidoc Week is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate indigenous culture and achievement and to remember past injustice with sorrow.
  2. What does Reconciliation mean to you?
  3. Reconciliation means trying to build harmonious and respectful relationships amongst all Australians.
  4. In your role, how do you contribute and celebrate NAIDOC Week at UWS?
    I will be attending the Yarramundi Lecture and encouraging my staff to participate in Naidoc Week activities
